ASHER
“Now wait a second....” I started.
But he lifted a hand, cutting me off. Stopping me mid-sentence. How dare he interrupt me?
But he continued on his tirade as if nothing had happened.
“A grandson I was promised… the granddaughter I was promised… does not exist,” he finished.
Then he leaned back and looked at me with quiet challenge.
“So I ask you, Asher Romano,” he said, “why would I continue upholding this contract where you promised a lot of things but haven’t upheld your end of the bargain?”
His gaze hardened.
“I’m just wondering… why should I continue respecting or upholding this contract? Because as far as I’m concerned—” He gestured toward the paper.
“......this contract does not exist.”
I gritted my teeth. Behind me, I saw Luca losing his shit. I had to look at him briefly, silently telling him to cool down.
This old man thinks he can play with me.
He thinks he can disrespect me.
He probably thinks I’m too young and stupid, and he’s trying to one-up me.
“Alex Volkov,” I said slowly, “this contract was between the Romanov family and the Volkov Bratva. You signed it and gave your word. I need to know if your word doesn’t mean anything anymore.”
We held each other's gaze before He chuckled. A soft, meowy sound that immediately got on my nerves.
I had to hold my emotions so hard not to react. He was probably doing this to see my reaction. I wasn’t going to give him the reaction he expected.
“I am not going to uphold a contract that you broke,” he snapped suddenly, his voice gaining heat.
“What have I broken in this contract?” I shot back.
“My daughter,” he said sharply. “You killed her.”
“I didn’t kill her,” I replied. “I defended myself. She came for me with my brother, as you know, and I tried putting all that under wraps in respect of you and your......”
“Everyone knows about it!” he suddenly shouted, his voice echoing through the warehouse. “You put shame on my name!”
“I didn’t. It was your own daughter,” I said coldly. “She was the one who recruited your own men, which should probably concern you. If your daughter can command your soldiers without your permission, maybe the real problem is that you can’t control your men.”
His eyes darkened.
“I was defending myself,” I continued before he could react. “She wanted to kill me..... And you’re forgetting that I lost my own brother.”
He laughed. Clear and free.
Not even trying to hide it anymore.
“You killed your brother,” he stated. His voice dripped with mockery. “A brother that was fucking your wife behind your back.”
The words slammed into the room.
“You wanted to do it.” he continued lazily. “And it had nothing to do with me.”
His eyes gleamed with cruel amusement.
“I know I acted like I didn’t care about your marriage,” he went on, “but I knew that you weren’t doing your part. You were supposed to be the one fucking your wife and getting her pregnant, not letting your brother do the job for you.”
His smile widened. “And your brother couldn’t even do it well,” he added, “because no child was the product of that either, were they?”
The room went quiet. The kind of quiet that vibrates with danger. Tension filled the warehouse now as we were both fired up.
