ARIELLA
I took a second before smiling.
“Okay,” I said.
I didn’t want to push it. I didn’t want him to think I didn’t trust him… or worse, realise that I was jealous.
Because that’s what it was, wasn’t it?
Leon was already completely taken by her. Something I was still trying to figure out. And now… Asher too?
Oh my God. I shook the thought away immediately. No. I wasn’t doing that.
“Our guests are waiting for us,” I said instead, forcing a lighter tone. “Go to the bathroom. I’ll go get Leon and his big brother Luca.”
Asher let out a small laugh. “Big brother Luca?”
“Yeah,” I said with a grin.
“Who knew he was such a crybaby?”
He laughed properly this time.
“Maybe he’s just scared Leon is going to steal his place as your best friend,” I added. “This is just his inner self coming out to protect himself.”
We both laughed at that.
“Luca and his younger brother Leon…” he shook his head. “That’s funny. I can’t believe he cares that much. He’s supposed to be my consigliere. People are supposed to be scared of him, not… getting him riled up like this by a six-year-old.”
I smiled.
“Okay,” he said, leaning in to kiss my forehead. “Let’s not keep everyone waiting.”
Then he walked off down the hallway toward the bathroom. I turned and headed in the opposite direction, going to find Leon and Luca, my steps steady as I made my way down the hallway toward the playroom.
The sounds reached me before I even got there, Leon’s loud, dramatic voice and Luca’s deeper one right behind it. I pushed the door open and found Leon on the floor, arms crossed, clearly in the middle of an argument, while Luca stood over him, looking far too amused for someone who was supposedly losing.
“I told you, that’s not how it works!” Leon snapped.
“And I told you,” Luca replied calmly, “that you’re wrong.”
“I’m not wrong!”
“You are.”
“I’m not!”
I leaned against the doorframe, watching them for a second before I finally spoke.
“Dinner is ready.”
Both of them turned to look at me.
Leon was the first to react. “Mom! Tell him I’m right.”
“I’m not getting involved in this,” I said immediately, already shaking my head. “Both of you, wash your hands and come to the dining room.”
“That means I won,” Luca muttered under his breath.
Leon gasped. “That does not mean that!”
“Dinner,” I repeated, firmer this time.
That did it. Leon jumped up instantly and ran past me, already heading down the hallway, while Luca followed at a much slower pace, hands in his pockets, that same easy smile on his face.
