ASHER
Luca nodded in understanding. The two of us kept talking for a while before he asked,
“Do you think he had something to do with Ariella's mother's appearance at the ball last night?”
I looked up immediately.
“You think he had something to do with it?”
“Probably,” I responded.
His eyes narrowed.
“Do you want to pay her a visit?”
“I already did.”
His eyebrows lifted.
“Mmmh.”
A small smile crossed his face.
“So that's where you went this morning.”
I sighed and leaned back into the chair.
“Well, I had to see her after her performance last night.”
I rubbed my jaw. “Because who knows what she'll do next.”
“Did she give you any names?” Luca asked.
“No.” I shook my head. “She is one crazy, crazy old woman.”
Luca tried hiding his smile. "Mother-in-law" he said in a mocking voice.
“I went there because I wanted to drive the point home that Ariella is mine.”
I looked down at my hands.
“She is the Donna now. And she can't act out of order and talk to my wife however she feels like."
Luca stared at me for a few seconds. Then he asked quietly,
“Do you think she's going to listen?”
I sighed. A long one. Because for the first time... I wasn't thinking like a Don. I was thinking like a husband.
“I really hope so,” I responded. “I really hope so.”
Because I looked down at my hands and all I could see was Ariella crying in my arms.
“Because the last thing I would want to do...” I said quietly, “Is to pay her another visit”
I didn't go home immediately after because we had business to discuss and also because I didn't want to see Ariella right now and lie. During the evening, we went to the docks and ensured that everything had arrived and was in order before I left, and then I finally went back home to my family.
I opened the door and Leon came rushing toward me giving me a full hug. I hugged him back, gave him a kiss on the head, and carried him with me inside
P. He was getting really heavy with all the exercises we did and the food he was eating now. He had really started, growing into himself, looking more grown-up than he actually was.
"Where's your mother?" I asked him as we walked further into the house.
"They're in the family room. She's drinking wine with Maria and Sia."
