Chapter 47
I woke up with a jolt, the phone still in my hand. The first thing I did was check the screen-still no calls. No texts. Nothing from Asher.
A cold wave of panic washed over me.
He should’ve called. Now I’m getting scared.
We both know what he does. He doesn’t tell me specifically what he does, but we both know what he gets up to every day. It’s serious. He could be dead. He could be hurt. He could be in the enemy’s hands.
Just to put it into a nutshell, I was scared. Scared for his life, wondering if he was okay-because this has never happened. He has never gone quiet on me for so long.
But before anything, I rush towards my parents’ door and knock. Nobody answers.
I open the door. There’s nobody inside.
“What time is it?” I ask the room. Nobody answers.
I start going down the stairs and hear voices coming from the kitchen.
I get in and see my dad at the counter. My mom is making breakfast.
I don’t even say good morning. I go towards my father, and the first thing I say is,
“Where’s Asher? Is he okay? What happened to him?”
My father’s eyes narrow, and my mom stops what she’s doing, looking at me.
“What did you hear?” she asks me.
“Nothing. That’s why I’m asking Dad.” I snap at her.
My father says, “I haven’t heard anything.’
})
“But, if something happened to him, would you know?”
“I don’t know. I’m not… I don’t know,” he says.
“What did he tell you?” my father asks. “Did he tell you he was in danger?”
“He’s not picking up my calls. He’s not answering my messages,” I tell my dad, and start getting emotional. Feel tears coming
My dad just stares at me and asks, “Is that all?”
“Yes, that’s all. He has never stopped taking my calls or responding to my messages. And because he’s not, something must have happened.”
And then I think to myself, ‘Maybe he lost his phone?’
My father looks at me, and it seems like he wants to tell me something, but he’s stopping himself.

But of course, my mom, who can’t keep her words to herself, decides to but in-
“Isn’t this a good thing?” she asks.
“What?” I turn to look towards her. “How is this a good thing? What if he is hurt… What if his…”
I can’t get myself to say the last words.
“Oh, he’s fine. You know the kind of work… the kind of work he does. I’m sure he’s fine.” My mother says unbothered by my worry.
“How sure are you? What kind of works? Do you know what they do? Have you ever done what he does? Evere gone to work with Papa?”
My mother looks at me with anger in her eyes as she says,
“You should have been breaking up with him. If he’s not picking up your calls, he’s not taking your messages, maybe you should take it as a sign and let him be. In fact, this will look great for you, because you no longer have to break up with him. Now he decided to take matters into his own hands and he’s breaking up with you. Don’t ask him for forgiveness and take this for what it is. It’s over between the two of you just like it should have been.
“No. Asher wouldn’t do that,” I say it towards her and then turn towards my father.
“Dad, can you find out if he’s okay? I just want to make sure that he’s fine.”
My father looks at me and then he says, “I’ll see what I can do.” And then he leaves the kitchen.
I turn back towards my mother who just looks at me and then shakes her head in disappointment, I don’t know why, but I still feel the need to defend myself as I say,
“I still care about him. Even if I have to break up with him, I still care about him. I just want to make sure that he’s okay.”
“If that’s the case, why do you keep on calling him and texting him all the time?”
“I didn’t,” I say. I defend myself.
You literally just came here and said, he’s not picking up your calls, not answering your messages. You should be creating distance, not looking… not going looking for him and making the bond even stronger between you.”
I look back at her with anger in my eyes. I don’t say anything as I stomp out of the kitchen and go back towards my bedroom. I just sit there until my dad comes.
He knocks on the door and then he gets in.
The moment I see him, I stand up and face him.
“What happened? Is he okay? Is he fine? Please don’t tell me something bad happened to him.” I say, my heart sped up.
My father shakes his head as he says, “I have to go to work. I’m late….”
“Yes, but what happened with Asher? Is he okay?”
