ASHER
A few of the soldiers chuckled. Bastian didn't. His breathing became uneven, and a light sheen of perspiration appeared across his forehead.
His eyes shifted toward me. "Do you really think this changes anything?" he asked. "You think killing me will end this? You think you can trust Yuri?"
He smiled. "My father didn't want him to be Pakhan for a reason."
I stepped forward.
"All I want is to end you and the people who supported you. I want to put an end to you and your little threats. That's all I care about."
His eyes narrowed.
"Hurting me won't change anything."
I smiled.
"Yes, it does, Bastian. You've already lost, and now you're just grasping at straws."
"No, I'm not," Bastian argued quickly. "Look... my father wanted me to be Pakhan for a reason. He was already preparing me to be Pakhan. I know things about the Bratva that Yuri doesn't. You make a deal with me, and you'll have the right man. I always fulfil my promises. You can trust my word and whatever agreement you made with Yuri... I'm sure I can do so much better."
I couldn't help it. I laughed.
"What exactly are you proposing?"
"I'm proposing you side with the next Pakhan." He responded, raising his head.
I laughed again.
"I know things about Matteo." He went on. "He's got operations running under you that you have no idea about. He came with soldiers today, but he left a few behind. You need to uproot them and fast. How are you going to get them? How are you going to find them?"
When I didn't interrupt, he got more hyped. "I know them, and I can give you their names. Matteo trusted me. He told me things....."
"You piece of shit!" Matteo snapped.
I couldn't stop another laugh.
"I'm leaving here with Matteo, and when I'm done with him... He's going to tell me every single personal thing about himself. I'll know how many times he scratches himself; I'll know the colour of his wife's hair before she bleaches it. He's going to tell me everything."
My smile got brighter. " I need nothing from you.....except for your hand, of course."
Bastian started struggling again, and Yuri stepped forward. He looked at one of his soldiers.
"Bring me an axe."
Bastian's smile finally disappeared.
"Yuri..."
The soldier hesitated.
"You heard me. Get me an axe."
The man ran. For the first time since I'd met him... Real fear crossed Bastian Volkov's face. He immediately turned to his brother, knowing that pleading with me wasn't going to work.
He reminded Yuri of their childhood, of their father, of growing up together and of everything they had survived side by side.
Yuri simply shook his head.
"Bastian... You should be thanking me. Asher wants to kill you, and I'm saving your life by taking your hand. You should be really thankful I'm doing all of this because you and I are blood. It's the only reason I'm doing this."
He walked closer.
"I'm expecting you to be very grateful. But instead... You're doing the total opposite. You're being such a buzzkill and totally ungrateful."
Bastian stared at him in disbelief.
"You're going to cut off my hand.....? I've been shot in the leg, and I'm already losing blood."
Yuri crouched slightly.
"I want to know something..... When Father promised you the title of Pakhan... What exactly were you planning to do with me?"
Bastian didn't respond.
"Everybody already expected me to be the next Pakhan. But all that time... In the shadows... He was preparing you."
Yuri shook his head.
