He doesn’t answer.
I call him. He doesn’t pick up.

I think I am about to lose it when My mother comes upstairs and tells me to get ready to go for dinner.
I think-perfect. I’m gonna go to dinner and then I’m gonna come back and deal with it.
If both of them don’t wanna talk to me, I’m going to find another way to find them. They’re probably-I’m sure Luca is probably somewhere partying. All I have to do is find out where he’s partying, go there, find him there, and then, in some way, force him to take me to Asher.
I go downstairs and have dinner with my parents knowing that I have a long night ahead of me.

Chapter 49
When I get back to my room, I start looking for traces of Luca. Is he somewhere partying? Has anyone seen him?
With a little help-thanks to my very public relationship with Asher-I get the right location. There he is. Apparently, he’s throwing a party at his father’s beach house, which is at least forty-five minutes away on a good day, and a full hour on a bad one.
I think about it. Should I get an Uber and go there?
I’m not asking my parents for permission. I already know the answer. They won’t allow it. I’d have to sneak out.
But just sneaking out isn’t the problem. Getting a ride is.
Still, I decided to be daring. I call Luca again.
He doesn’t pick up. It’s okay, I was expecting that.
I sent him a text: Where are you?
He doesn’t respond.
I wait five minutes before I send another message:
‘I’m coming to you right now. I need to see Asher, and you’re going to take me to him.’
Another five minutes pass.
I send another: I’m just calling an Uber and dropping at your house.
And just as the message is delivered-he calls.
“What’s up, little Ari?” he says, voice breathless like he’d been running or… doing something else. I don’t think too much about it.
“Come pick me up and take me to see Asher,” I say, straight to the point.
There’s a beat of silence before he speaks again.
“Is that a demand? Do you think you’re the Don now? The don’s wife? Sending me around on errands?”
He doesn’t know how close he is to the truth-how the actual Don does want to marry me-but I doubt Luca knows anything about it.
So I push the thought out of my head as I answer him.
“I don’t know about titles,” I say, voice steady, “but you’ve taken me to school a few times when Asher was busy. So I’m just asking… will you give me a ride?”
There’s silence again, a long breath before he finally sighs.
“Listen, little Ari… I like you, okay?” he says, not waiting for me to respond before continuing. “But Asher is really mad. For whatever the hell you did-I don’t know what happened between you two-but he’s mad.”
“He’s mad at me?” I ask, confused. “Why?”

“Like I said,” he answers, “I don’t know what the hell happened between you two. But he’s mad. And this is not a good idea.”
“What? Why is he mad at me? What did I do?”
He doesn’t answer that. Instead, he keeps going, like he’s brushing my words aside.
“I don’t think you should see him right now.’
“What?”
})
“I think you should let him cool off. And when he’s ready, he’ll come back. He’ll get back to you. Just give him some space, okay?”
I hear the shift in his voice like he’s about to hang up, and I blurt,
“No.”
Silence. I don’t know if he’s frozen or if he actually hung up, but I keep going anyway.
“Luca, listen to me. I want to talk to Asher, and I want to talk to him now. I’m going out of my bedroom window. I’m about to sneak out… I don’t know-maybe I’ll catch a ride from somewhere or call an Uber. I will find my way. I know where you are. And I’m coming there right now, and you’re going to take me to see Asher.”
“Really?” he asks, almost mocking.
“Yes,” I say, firm and without hesitation. “And when Asher finds out I asked you for a ride and you let me take a ride with random people instead, you think he’s gonna be happy about that?”
There’s a beat of silence before he chuckles darkly.
“So what, you’re threatening me now?”
“I’m not threatening you,” I say. “I’m just stating facts.”
“Okay, here’s a fact for you,” he says coolly. “What if I just call your parents and tell them their precious daughter is thinking of sneaking out to a party full of alcohol, drugs, and sex? Huh? What do you think about that?”
I go silent. He’s called me out.
But tonight, I’m not the kind of girl who backs down. Tonight, I’m daring. I’m determined. I’m gonna get what I want and I’m not afraid to use every card I have.
–
“Yeah?” I say after a breath. “Maybe you’ll tell them. Maybe they’ll come up to my room, yell their lungs out, maybe even lock my window. And then, they’ll go back to sleep. And I’ll still sneak out.”
I pause, letting my voice lower into something sharp and certain.
“I don’t know what time it’ll be, but if I can’t come to you, I’m going straight to Asher’s house to look for him myself. Either way-I’m seeing Asher tonight.”
I take a breath. “So, Luca… what do you say?” I ask hopeful.

“I say, fuck it. This has nothing to do with me. I don’t know what happened between you and Asher. I don’t know why you’re putting me in the middle of it, but I refuse to play that game. So you know what? Pretend you and I never talked. Do whatever the hell you want to do.”
