I look across the corpse to her eyes, and she stares back at me. She knows. She sees it. How much I have simply changed, more like upgraded to the finest version of what I was when I was young.
Petty criminal then, now a cold–blooded one, who will kill without blinking. Marlik can’t, but I will.
I cross the corpse and set my jaw, turning toward the window to summon him, my cousin, Desmond.
“Jahan…” My mother calls, but that’s the momen I walk to the door and open it for Desmond to step in. He suddenly pauses when he sees the corpse, then looks up at me as if to ask whether I’ve lost my mind.
“Where is his own apartment?” I turn to my mother and ask, and she rises.
“It’s just at the backyard.”
“Take me,” I request quietly, then turn toward Desmond, who looks at me in awe again. “Watch my back.”
I haul the body up and follow my mother toward the lonely backyard she spoke of. A single apartment stands there, and fortunately, no one is around. She opens the door cautiously, and I enter, heading toward the couch where I dump the body.
Quickly, I head to the drawer where the drugs are likely to be hidden, under rugs and at the top of the shelf. I find one sachet beneath the rug and quickly empty it, pouring it onto his face to make it appear as an overdose.
I’m just finishing when footsteps approach. I pause, and my mother turns toward the entrance, where a man now stands. This one has a gun, a security guard, just like the one I killed. I pause, my eyes fixed on him as he takes in what I’ve done. Slowly, he lifts his gun, but I don’t panic. Desmond is watching my back, and he will.
“I will blow your head off. Move away from him he threatens, voice shaky. “I said get…‘
The rest of his words die in his throat. Desmond pushes him toward me, and I catch his neck, twisting, choking, but this one struggles. He lashes a punch and manages to press the barrel against my skull.
“Hands up or I’ll kill you…‘

I yank the gun free in a blink and press it to his temple.
Rule One, never hesitate.
No threats, no warning.
Just pull the trigger.
That’s what separates killers from predators.

He raises his hands, trembling in surrender but then mother’s voice cuts through the tense air.
“He came at night… to force me. Every night.”
The guard goes pale and he quickly try to defend himself.
“I didn’t…”

fires. The dull thud of the silver bullet finds its mark through his forehead. His eyes blank and He falls.
“Boss, they’re coming,” Desmond warning came after a heart stopping second and I fling the gun aside, clearing it of prints. I take my mother’s wrist, and we slip into her room just as the intruders rush past.
We close the door, and I exhale, jaw tight. I stare at her, realizing the weight of everything she endured. Rape. Many years of torment.
She pulls me close, holding me tight, reading my thoughts. Her fingers dig into my hair, then she releases, searching my eyes.
“I am fine now that my son is here. I am fine,” she whispers. “But it will be my dead body next if you leave without me. It’s been eighteen years I won’t be separated from you anymore. If you must leave this estate without me… pull a trigger in my head before you do.”
I pull her to me again, stopping her from assuming the impossible. I kiss her hair and study her eyes. No words. Just silence. I kiss her hair once more, then turn toward the door and leave.
I make my way to my bedroom where Evalina still waits. Desmond rushes to catch up.
“Boss,” he calls, but I ignore him until he blocks my path. “Boss…”
I stop, swallowing hard, keeping my eyes off his. I cannot let him see me raw, emotional.
“What is going on? You killed two men, and… who is that woman?”

I don’t respond, attempting to bypass him, but he stands firm.
“For you to kill in another mafia territory… she means too much to you. Who is…”

“My mother,” I cut him off, lifting my gaze to meet his. “She raised me after my real mother was raped to death. Satisfied?”
Desmond goes pale. His eyes widen.
“She is Marlik’s mother?”
I nod, sighing shakily and rubbing my temple. So much to think about, so much to process.
“Cupid…”
“Tomorrow,” I interrupt firmly. “Tomorrow we leave here.”
“My uncle’s orders were to stay until…”
“My mother is traumatized here. She needs a change of environment. I will talk to father. Get ready. Book a private jet, mine, not the Godlike’s.”
With that, I walk away, still shaken by the story, the truth, and the revelation. Everything still leaves me stunned.
