I watch as her eyes flutter open. She blinks once then suddenly sits up to stare at me. I don’t move or speak from the couch where I sit, simply watching her. Instead, I allow her to wonder what happened the previous night.
She lifts the bed coverlet around her to peer beneath it. She swallows, as though already realizing nothing was done. She would know from the feel of her body.
“What happened last night?” she finally asks, her voice small.
“You slept off before we could start anything,” I reply, voice devoid of warmth. She swallows and stares back at me, and I watch the flicker of selfdisappointment cross her eyes. She knows she lost that one chance, and that means a lot.
“I will take my bath,” she says, getting up from the bed and heading for the exit. I don’t stop her. I don’t move until the door opens and closes. Only then do I shift my gaze toward my cellphone beside me.
Many thoughts had run through my mind as dawn crept in, and now I have arrived at a solid decision. I don’t yet know the steps or details, but the goal is clear. To bring my rogue family back together.
I pick up my cellphone, about to dial my father’s contact, when his call comes in first, making me pause. There is one clause though.
Alpha Ruis must know about my plan. I need his word on it.
The phone rings a few seconds before I answer. His voice comes on the other end.
“Son?”
I swallow. Son. Sometimes he calls me that, other times Cupid, and King when we are in the underworld mafia business. He knows how haunted I am by my rogue family’s disappearance, and hearing that he might be behind it shrinks something in me.
“You’re awake, Father?” I ask quietly.
“Have you signed the deal with Dravens?” he asks, and I pause.
“Not yet. I was supposed to yesterday when…”
“They are not the target,” he cuts in. “We need the purest dust, finest drugs and it wasn’t the Dravens who had it. I just got the information. We got it wrong earlier, but now there’s a

I frown, slowly rising to my feet.

“The Dravens‘ drugs are the finest I’ve ever taken. I had some last night. Who else can have finer?”
“Feroz Ginger.”
I freeze. The air that was warm now turns cold, sharp, chilling. I clutch the phone tighter, needing to hear him clearly.
“What?”
“Feroz. A druglord. He controls massive stashes, Cupid. If we strike a deal with him, Godlike wealth will triple. I want you to leave the Dravens‘ estate this morning. You must touch down before nightfall.”
Feroz. I sigh. That is the man my mother spoke about, the one who trapped Marlik, framed him for murder.
“Dad?” I manage, voice tight.
“Speak.”
“Can I bring someone with me?”
Silence falls at my request before he asks,
“Who?”
I wait, then speak.
“My mother.”
At that word, the silence stretches like a lifetime He likely knows exactly who I mean. He knows I only have one mother left after my real mother died, my best friend’s mother who raised me.
“If the Dravens give her willingly,” he replies, the disconnects, but that is enough to set my plan in motion.
Perhaps mother was right. Her prayers are finally being heard after eighteen years of pleading to the moon goddess.
Feroz. I will destroy him with my own two hands.

“Cupid?” Eva’s voice comes from behind. I turn. She looks stunned. “I just got a memo that Godlike is breaking the business deal with Dravens.”
I stare at her for what feels like an eternity. She is dressed and ready for the day. I nod, walking over to pull her briefly into my arms.
“My dad’s order. He said Feroz has the best dust. Godlike wants the best.”
She looks troubled and cups my cheek between her palms, searching my eyes before rising onto her toes to kiss me, but I pull back, stepping away to create distance.
“I have to go. There’s nothing you can do for me” I say, turning to pack my few things.
“So you’re just going to leave?” she demands.
“What do you want me to do? It’s an order. You know better than anyone how the Mafia rules work.”
She swallows, then closes in to hug me tight.
“Cupid, don’t go. We haven’t even done anything. You can’t just leave.” She pulls back, eyes pleading and I nearly pity her. She fell for the wrong man. “You can’t go. Please, stay.”
I study her eyes before taking her cheek in my palm.
“You know the woman you spilled tea on yesterday?” I ask, and she pauses, recalling it.
“That filthy woman? She is a rogue from Downside Rogue Town.”
“I want her to come with me,” I say, choking back the rage at the way she describes my mother. “Give her to me, and perhaps I’ll spare some time when we meet again.”
Silence stretches. She searches my eyes.
“I can’t let her go. Feroz will kill me.”
“And who is Feroz?”
She scoffs, stepping away and shaking her head.
“Feroz is a monster. You’re a psychopath, but you can’t go after Feroz.”
I swallow her words and suddenly smile, almost genuinely. Doubt flashes in her eyes as if she regrets speaking.
I slowly close the distance between us and pin her against the wall. I hold her gaze for a long moment before leaning in.

“He is powerful enough to befriend the law, and ruthless enough to chop off my father’s two legs. He
put him in a wheelchair,to this day.”
“How did my mother end up here if Feroz is the one threatening her?”
Evalina’s eyes widen, awe creeping in. She swallows.
“That maid is your mother…”
“Answer me,” I cut in coldly, and she shivers. I am in no mood for nonsense, and I swear I will
kill her where she stands if she calls her ‘maid‘ again.
