Snowflakes

The shot rang out, the shove, the weight of a body shielding mine. I shake my head, trying to chase the flashes away, but they come anyway, persistent, sharp and Rasha’s dead eyes stare back at me. The images settle like stones in my chest, and I jerk upright suddenly from my deep slumber, screaming.
Kashi rushes to my bed at once, gathering me into his arms, holding me through the shivers trembling down my spine. My breath is uneven, my mind scrambling to grasp what happened and where I am.
I pull back quickly, cup his face with both hands, searching his eyes as though to confirm he’s here, that I’m still alive. That all of this is real. Only then do I notice the hospital bed beneath
“Kashi?”
“Hey, I’m here,” he murmurs softly.
I press a desperate kiss to his cheek and fold into his arms again, clinging tighter this time.
“You’re safe now,” he whispers. “Everyone is here.”
I stay wrapped in him, for a long moment, grounding myself in the warmth of his presence. But then footsteps echo, and the door creaks open. Roc steps in first, stopping right at the entrance with a heavy sigh he can’t hide.
Guilt strikes me instantly. Seeing him like that, exhausted, worried, I feel the weight of how much I frightened them.
He approaches, and I brace for the scolding I deserve. But instead, he only reaches for my hand and gives it a gentle squeeze.
“How do you feel?”
“I’m fine,” I murmur, swallowing hard, my eyes pleading with apology. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t you dare,” he warns softly, pinning me with those firm eyes. I bite my lip, swallow the tears burning their way up, and lean against Kashi again before pulling back to ask cautiously.
“Where is… where’s the man who brought me here?”

“It was your colleague. Dana,” Kashi explains. “She told the receptionist you’re a Frost, so mother–in–law was called immediately and you were admitted.”
My heart clenches.
Cupid.
He’s the one who saved me. He took a bullet for me. He’s the one who needed help.
I look around for my phone, for anything, but it isn’t here. And then like ice my memory snaps to the flash drive.
“Kashi, the flash drive… the map of…‘
“Eshan already came,” he says gently. “He picked it up yesterday.”
I freeze.
“I’ve been out since yesterday?”
“Yes. It happened yesterday afternoon. You were admitted by evening. Eshan was here. Sera and Mirey too.”
I sigh shakily, worrying about the case again.
“You should rest,” Roc says. I nod, lowering my gaze in apology.
“What about Dad? Did he…”
“We managed to hide it from him yesterday,” Roc says. “But not for long. It’s better you tell him yourself so he won’t panic. He’s returning from his trip soon.”
His phone begins ringing. He checks the screen.
“It’s Pinky,” he says, handing it to me.
I take it and answer. Silence greets me. Pinky doesn’t speak, but I feel her breathing there.
“I’m safe, Pinky. Not even a bruise.”
A soft sniff trembles through the line.
“I’ll arrive in three days. Will you… forgive me for not coming sooner?”

A small, sad smile touches my lips.
“Piece of cake. Just don’t forget my dress.”
She lets out a wet chuckle.
“Okay then… I love you, Snow.”
“Love you too, Pinky.”

She disconnects, and for a moment, my heart feels light, grateful. I’m not alone. People care. People are looking out for me.
Footsteps echo again, many this time. The door opens, and Eshan walks in. I sit up straight at once. He crosses the room in seconds and pulls me into a tight hug. When he lets go, I see the exhaustion etched on his face.
“I thought I’d die when mother–in–law called to say you were here,” he murmurs. Then he glances at Kashi. “Can we sue the H.O.W.L deputy director for putting my sister in danger?”
“It won’t be easy,” Kashi replies. “She’s staff.”
“He had the right to assign her to any mission,” Roc adds.
Eshan sighs, defeated, then turns to me with a tired smile.
“Your hunch was right. And because of it, you solved the case. Also… you have guests. Will you meet them?”
Curious, I nod.
The door opens again, and the deputy director, Mr. Sonny, steps in with Wrinks, Mr. Gerald, and Quince. Mr. Sonny approaches me with a wide, satisfied smile.
“You did well. Thanks to you, we can expose Feroz fully.”
I blink, startled.
“The warehouse,” Wrinks adds quickly. “The flash drive had the map. We got there in time. Feroz is a drug lord. We shut down one of his warehouses loaded with hard drugs.”
My stomach drops.
“My gods…” I whisper. Then I look at Quince. “But the map displayed sixteen warehouses.”

“Yes,” he replies. “We checked all sixteen. Fifteen were empty.”
“Meaning they already cleared them out,” Mr. Sonny says. “But that last warehouse was active. We shut it down. And with Rasha’s statement, even after her death, we can charge Feroz. Marlik will be appearing in court tomorrow.”
I freeze. I look at Eshan for confirmation.
He nods.
“I’ll be prosecuting. But Marlik won’t be on trial. He won’t even need a lawyer. We just need his statement to take Feroz down. He served four years for a crime he didn’t commit. If he cooperates, he may finally walk free.”
Goosebumps ripple over my skin. I turn to Roc, silently asking the question tightening in my chest. He shakes his head firmly.
“Neil White is presiding as judge tomorrow. Not me.”
Neil White.
The brother–in–law of Ares Bani.
Nothing good ever comes from that man.
I swallow my worry down and ask the question that’s been gnawing at me.
“Dana… where is she? I heard she brought me here.”
A heavy silence falls over the room.
Kashi’s hand smooths gently over my back.
I turn slowly to Mr. Sonny, dread curling through my veins.
“You… you won’t be seeing her again,” he says quietly. “Overdose of painkillers. Dana is dead.”
