“My elder sisters are Catherine and Lindy. They’re both married, but they come visiting often. Catherine has a son, but Lindy doesn’t.”
“You get along with them?” I asked quietly.
He shook his head, shrugging lightly.
“They hate me.” He scoffed, eyes lifting to mine. “They hate me so much I wonder where they find the energy. I don’t speak to them. Never once.”
I slowed, studying him. If I didn’t know what he was capable of, I would have thought he was exaggerating.
“You spent eighteen years with them and never spoke a word to them?”
“Fuck them,” he murmured, leaning back in his chair. “They called me a rogue every chance they got. Spat at me in my early years in that pack. They were part of the reason I decided to live in isolation.”
I looked at Cupid, biting my lower lip gently. He wasn’t just a survivor, he was someone who clawed his way through hell and still learned to stand tall. He must have endure too much.
“A lot,” he murmured, as though he had read my thoughts. His gaze dropped to the plate, though he wasn’t eating anymore. “My first month there was the craziest. I lived in the security quarters, not far from the maids. I wasn’t allowed to sit at the dinning table. I sat on the floor and waited for them to finish eating. The leftovers were what I ate. Meat they spat out and tossed aside, drinks they swallowed halfway and abandoned. That was what they left for me, and I accepted it… like a starving rogue wolf.”
He scoffed, briefly lost in the memory.
“I survived like that for months. Humiliated. One time Yenda said I stole his money. That happened at a family gathering. My aunty Bloom, Desmond’s mother, was there, and Desmond saw me for the first time. Great embarrassment. And because of it, my father said I’d starve. Since I was a ‘pickpocket,’ he believed his son. For days, I was on an empty stomach.”
His voice dipped lower.
“Then one night I heard soft footsteps. And nothing. When I went out to the hall, there was a plate of food waiting. It continued, night after night, until I decided to see who it was. Turns

out it was Desmond. From then on, we became close, real close. When his mother was preparing to leave, Desmond insisted on staying. And he did. As time went, I was pardoned at last. I was supposed to return to eating leftovers when my grandma ecided she had had enough. My grandma, that’s Alpha Ruis’s mother.”
A small softness touched his tone there.
“She refused to eat unless they let me join the table. Because of her, I was invited to sit with them for the very first time. You have no idea how it felt, to eat like the nobles. She was smiling brightly, pouring wine, giving me more food. But sitting there get boring real quick. My elder sisters hated it. They believed a rogue should stay a rogue. Catherine decided to frame me. She lied that I peeped at her while she bathed, almost tried to force myself on her. And that’s a line nobody crosses around me.”
He scoffed coldly.
“I’m crazy about many things, Snow, but rape? Never. I won’t accept such an insult, such a lie. For the first time, I flared up. Stood my ground. That kind of thing killed my mother. I won’t wish it on anyone, and definitely not commit it. The issue was resolved eventually. Everyone knew she lied, and they apologized, telling me to forgive and forget.” His jaw tightened. “But who would? I don’t forgive that easily. That woman is crazy. I wouldn’t even look at her body once. So unappealing.”
I smiled softly, relieved that at least his painful story had glimmers of light in it.
“How did it feel growing up with Almira?” I asked, curious about the sister who held such a tender place in him.
This time, he smiled genuinely.
“Beautiful. She is… a light in my darkest tunnel. I love her. She’s the youngest of the Godlikes. Still a teenager. Father had her years after Lindy. She was a little pup when I was adopted. I literally see her grow. Almira is the jewel of Godlike Pack. Spoilt with too much care and attention, but don’t get me wrong, we don’t spare the rod. She knows right from wrong. She grew up practically in my arms. We shared a room at some point, before I left the pack. You should have seen her cry a river when I packed my things.”
He smiled, and I couldn’t help smiling too. I was glad someone had loved him that fiercely.
I lowered my gaze, took another bite of my food, but curiosity tugged at me again. I sighed softly and looked up.
“Cupid?” He glanced up. “I… I know you deserve to be with your rogue family too. And I try my best for the case… for Marlik, but… the case is closed and…”

“It’s not your fault. You did your best honestly,” he cut in quietly, shrugging as if masking his own hurt. “Marlik will be out. I’ll make sure of it.”
The vow made me stare at him. I loved his confidence, but I had to tell him the truth.
“The case is closed, Cupid.”
“It will be reopened.”
I shook my head. “It’s not that simple. The judge shut it down. No one has the power to reopen it. Not even the director of H.O.W.L.”
“There is,” he murmured, eyes lifting to mine. “The Chairwoman of Justice.”
I froze. He was right. But…
“She won’t do it, will she?”
“Not unless her husband asks for a favor.”
“And why would her husband ask for that… for you?”
He held my gaze, paused, then sighed.
“The Chairwoman of Justice is the Luna of Godlike Pack. My father’s wife. She is his mate.”
My breath stalled.
“What? Really?”
“Yup. Though she isn’t on good terms with Father anymore. They’re separated, they only keep in touch because of the children. I go down on my knees tonight and beg Father, and I know he’ll help. It’s a lot to ask. For Alpha Ruis to approach his Luna first when he swore never to do so… it’s a wound to his pride.”
I sighed, understanding the weight.
“Did the Luna accept you?”
Cupid frowned a little before nodding.
“Not really. She stayed the first year I arrived but left the second. Came and went. Eventually, she stopped coming eight years ago, only returns for Christmas to spend time with her children since Father won’t let her take Almira. Luna Sashimi… Sash, as Father calls her, is nice to me only because she knows I love Almira genuinely. When she left Godlike pack

completely, she had a word with me. To keep her baby safe.”
I nodded softly before murmuring,
“You don’t call her mother.”
He swallowed, meeting my eyes.

“To someone like Luna Sash, image is everything. I was a thief in her eyes. A rogue. Lower than omega. She believed I’d amount to nothing. But as the years passed, she watched the boy she looked down on grow up into… me. Not to brag but it’s just grace. Last December when she came, there was admiration in her eyes. Respect. She started inviting me for tea, dinner, parties. To show me off to her friends.”
I smiled sadly. Such was life indeed.
“And do you go?”
Cupid looked at me and smirked, almost wickedly.
“No. Why would I? Even if I had memory loss, I wouldn’t forget the way she looked at me back then. People don’t care about who you are, especially not a downsider rogue. They care about what you can bring to their table.”
“You brought something to the Godlike table?”
“More than you can ever imagine,” he murmured.
And I believed every single word.
