It was the sound of gravel echoing beneath shoes that snapped through the haze. By the time I blinked, the court session was already over, but the words of Neils White, spoken from the bench, still rang deep within the courtroom.
Cameras were flashing now. Voices overlapped. Reporters surged forward.
But it was done.
Finally he was free.
I remained seated while everyone else began to move, my eyes fixed on Marlik. I couldn’t quite wrap my head around it, what he must be feeling now, knowing he could finally go home. Home to them. His mother. His sister. The ones Cupid said had been grieving all these
years.
“Snow? Snow!”
I startled, blinking hard as reality snapped back into place. Eshan stood before me. I rose to my feet immediately, swallowing.
“Yes?”
He searched my face, as though trying to detect something hidden beneath the surface, but I held steady.
“You won the case, as usual. I mean… you did it.”
Our eyes met. He swallowed.
“You have a lot to say to everyone at home.”
My shoulders nearly sagged. Before I could respond, his assistant called out to him, and he turned away, heading toward the man.
“Snow, you should go ahead and get his thumbprint,” Mr. Gerald said, making me turn back. “I suppose you’re used to him by now, aren’t you?”
He extended a statement identifying Marlik Rogue as a werewolf, standard documentation to be submitted to the Moon Tower for official recording and confirmation of release.

My gaze shifted briefly to Quince, then to Wrinks. I sighed and nodded, taking the documents before walking toward Marlik.
He was still seated alone, eyes fixed on nothing.
As I approached, he lifted his gaze to me. Relief bloomed in my chest at the sight of his wrists and ankles bare. No chains.
I stopped before him and quietly placed the report on the table.
“Um… you need to thumbprint here.”
He didn’t look down. His eyes stayed on my face sharp, intense, as if stripping me down to the soul.
“I told you to stay off this case,” he said. I swallowed. There was no humor there. No warmth. “You think this is a joke?”
I sighed shakily, biting my lower lip before shaking my head.
“I’m fine. And it’s my job.”
His
gaze traveled over me slowly before returning to my face.
“I heard Rasha was shot before you. Are you okay?”
Concern.
It hit me then, clear as day. With whatever was growing between Cupid and me, Marlik was… family now. A brother–in–law, whether we named it or not.
I nodded gently. His eyes lingered a moment longer before finally dropping to the document. He studied it carefully, then pressed his thumb to the
page.
At last.
I smiled, gathered the papers, and handed them to Wrinks, who’d been waiting. The courtroom was nearly empty now. Eshan was nowhere in sight, and I exhaled softly.
The case was over.
When I turned back, Marlik had risen from his seat and moved toward the window, staring out. From behind him, I paused. unable to deny it. There was something about him. The same dangerous, untamed aura Cupid carried. That gangster edge.

“Snow.”
Eshan’s voice came from behind. I turned to him.

“I need to go to the Moon Tower to submit documents and give explanations concerning Marlik Rogue’s case. I’ll call Kashi to come pick you up.”
He reached for his phone, but Mr. Gerald stepped closer.
“There’s a meeting at H.O.W.L she’ll be attending. We’re riding together.”
Eshan gave him a brief look, then turned back to me silent, questioning.
“I’ll be fine,” I said with a smile.
He nodded, took my wrist, and pulled me aside.
“After the meeting, don’t ride alone. Call Roc or Kashi.” His gaze flicked briefly toward Marlik
at the window. “I have a feeling this case will turn bloodier now that Marlik is free.”
I nodded obediently.
“I’ll call one of them. Don’t worry about me. Drive safe.”
He kissed my temple and left.
I exhaled shakily.
Just then, my phone vibrated. I pulled it out to see it was a text from Cupid.
My heart jumped. I rushed to the window and spotted a black, tinted luxury car waiting outside. From the build alone, I knew it was his.
A man stepped out and stood beside the car. I smiled immediately. He was the one Cupid told me would come for Marlik.
“Marlik,” I said softly, turning toward him, “your ride is here.”
His shoulders tensed. He turned to me, and I nodded to confirm it was true.
With a slight frown, he stepped closer and looked outside.
“It’s from Cupid,” I added gently. “He said he’d send someone.”
Confusion crossed his face. I caught it instantly and corrected myself.

“I mean… Jahan.”
Something stirred in me at the sound of his real name.
“He has a new name?” Marlik muttered. “That bastard.”
Then he sighed.

He turned to me and stared for a long moment before reaching for my hand. His grip was careful, gentle, as if I were something fragile.
“Thank you.”
And with that, he let go and walked away.
The man opened the car door for him. Marlik stepped inside. The car pulled away, disappearing from view.
A smile curved my lips.
I lifted my phone and texted Cupid, letting him know Marlik Rogue was finally going home, free.
“Snow, come on,” Quince said behind me.
I nodded, pocketed my phone, and followed him toward the H.O.W.L vehicle, wondering what this new meeting would bring.
As I settled into the backseat, my phone beeped again.
I smiled, already expecting Cupid, but when I checked the screen, the name made hitch.
