I stared at my cellphone screen for a long moment, letting the newscaster’s voice roll in the background as it narrated the reality unfolding on the screen. And I felt it. Deep,
overwhelming relief.
Marlik is free.
It is such a good day to be alive.
I set my phone down and moved toward the window, staring out at the cloudy sky in silence. With his case finally over, I could take a few days off. A short vacation.
A small smile curled at the corner of my lips. I would be able to face Mother with a bit more confidence now.
“Boss?”
I turned and found Desmond standing there. For a heartbeat, he simply looked at me then smiled.
“Good news. We won.”
I nodded, turning back toward the TV.
“I honestly thought Dad wouldn’t ask his wife for the favor,” I said, exhaling. “I can’t even imagine how he called her.”
Desmond walked closer and leaned against the desk.
“You know my Aunt Sash has always loved my uncle. She’s still in love with him. She’d do whatever he asked.”
I nodded slowly.
“Yeah. They’re mates, after all.”
I checked my wristwatch.
“We should start rounding things up. The new drugs won’t hit the streets until after

Thanksgiving.”
“Does that mean we’re taking a break?” Desmond asked, curious.
Before I could answer, my phone rang. Desmond glanced at it, since he was closer.
“It’s Almira.”

I stepped forward and took the phone, bracing myself. I hadn’t seen her in a while, and the last time had been rushed.
I pressed the phone to my ear but What came through made my heart drop.
A sob.
A sharp, broken sniffle.
I went cold.
“Almira?” I said softly.
She cried harder.
I lowered the phone, my brows knitting as Desmond straightened from the desk.
“What’s wrong?”
“I don’t know,” I muttered, and bolted.
I didn’t need a car. My speed was enough. Wind tore past me as I left nothing but a whoosh of air behind. In the blink of an eye, I was bursting into the Godlike Pack grounds.
I stopped before the Alpha’s building, swallowing hard to steady myself, then headed inside.
They were all there. Everyone. Even my grandmother.
Almira sat curled in a corner chair but the moment she saw me, she rushed over and threw herself into my arms. Her grip was fierce, desperate, like she’d been waiting for me all along.
I held her, my heart pounding, until my eyes drifted to Yenda.
He stood there in his usual suit, but the buttons were crooked, his tie uneven, his posture off.
My gaze shifted to Father. He sat slumped, exhausted, as if he’d finally reached the end of something. Slowly, he picked up a report and extended it toward me.

I gently eased Almira away and took the papers.
One glance was enough.
Goosebumps raced over my skin.
“What?” was all I managed as I looked up at Yenda.
He met my stare with that infuriating, guiltless look.
“I didn’t know they were mafia. If I had known, I wouldn’t have…”
I punched him before he could finish.
He staggered back, but I didn’t give him time to recover. I grabbed him by the throat, slammed him down, and began choking him.
“My goodness! Father,,stop him!” Catherine shrieked.
Father didn’t move.

Yenda tapped frantically as air left his lungs. Just then, the sound of a car screeched to a halt, followed by running footsteps.
Desmond burst into the living room and froze at the sight.
He rushed forward and tore me away. I let go at the last second, kicking Yenda off viciously.
“What the fuck, Cupid? Calm down! What happened?” Desmond demanded as Yenda coughed and writhed on the floor.
I dragged my fingers through my hair, breathing hard, then nodded toward the papers scattered on the floor.
Desmond bent down and read.
His face drained in an instant.
Yenda had signed as guardian to Almira’s shares in Godlike Legal Empire, using her identity to gamble in an underground den.
He lost, and now the mafia organization from the gambling den had issued a notice.
They were coming to claim Almira as the prize.

I knew exactly what men like that did to girls like her.
Desmond looked up, horror and fury etched into his face.
“Eight hours,” he said grimly. “That’s all we have.”
I set my jaw.
“Who are they?”
“The Horns Mafia Gang. They specialize in sex trade.”
“Get me the boss’s details. Set up a meeting. Call him directly and say
it’s me.”

Desmond pulled out his phone and stepped out. Minutes later, he returned.
“He’ll meet you.”
I exhaled shakily and nodded.
Then Almira’s voice cut through the room.
“So you’re leaving again? To clean up Yenda’s mess?”
“Keep quiet and be grateful you’ll be safe,” Lindy snapped, rolling her eyes.
Almira ignored her and turned to Father.
“So this is it? This is why you adopted him? So he can run your dirty errands and kill people?”
“Almira…” I began.
She looked at me, chest heaving, biting her lip to hold back more words.
“Don’t you
dare murder anyone for me, Cupid. I won’t hesitate to hang myself if you do. I hate this family.”
She stormed out.
Silence followed.
My phone buzzed. The location of the Horns Mafia territory flashed on the screen, hundreds of miles away.
I’d need to fly.

“I’ll book your flight,” Desmond said, already moving.
I bowed slightly to Father before heading out, but his voice stopped me.
“Cupid.”
I turned.

“Don’t kill anyone,” he said quietly. “That girl means her words. And she’s the only valuable thing her mother left me. Go. Come back.”
I nodded and walked out. Instead of a holiday, This is what I get.
Just great.
