Ares
Everyone was already seated around the long conference table when he entered.
Cupid.

He strode into the private hall with his man trailing a step behind, and I fought hard not to stare. But I couldn’t help myself.
He moved toward his chair with that effortless command, but just then his phone rang. He pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and handed it off to his assistant, who stepped outside to take the call.
At that exact moment, the door opened again, and Snow walked in.
My breath caught. She had slipped away after her speech, and I’d been restless in her absence, far more than I cared to admit.
She paused in the doorway for a heart-stopping second, eyes sweeping the room before briefly landing on Cupid. I could have sworn her pupils flared, just for an instant before she composed herself and glided to her seat.
Cupid pulled out her chair.
She nodded politely in thanks, a small gesture that made me raise an eyebrow. I swallowed, struggling for calm, and noticed even Yenda, Cupid’s own brother looked mildly surprised.
This adopted son didn’t extend courtesy like that to just anyone.
So why Snow?
“It’s getting late,” one of the Godlike Legal Empire board shareholders finally broke the silence. “Let’s wrap up
the schedule.”
We all settled in to listen.
“Miss…”
“Just Snow, please,” she corrected Yenda again with a gentle smile. He nodded.
“Snow, you’ll represent the humans for these donations. Our team has prepared detailed manuals for both you and Cupid. Your first stop will be Priest Johan’s parish.”

Snow nodded attentively, until the door opened urgently.
“Boss?” Cupid’s assistant called, tone pressing.

Every head turned. Cupid regarded him a moment, jaw tightening, then rose and left the hall without a word. Whatever the call was, it demanded immediate attention.
I exhaled, almost able to breathe easier now that he was gone. I turned back to Yenda as he continued, but my gaze drifted to Snow.
She wasn’t listening anymore. The rapt focus she’d shown moments ago had fractured, her attention scattered, unsteady.
“Here are the manuals for you and Cupid,” Yenda said, sliding them across. She barely glanced at them. Her eyes flicked toward the door again.
That small motion twisted something in my chest, whispering dangers I didn’t want to believe. Was there something between them?
“Thank you,” she murmured absently, gaze drifting back to the empty doorway.
I studied her. ffngers fidgeting, pinching at her skin as if grounding herself against rising panic.
I couldn’t make sense of it. Then the door opened once more.
Cupid returned, resuming his seat with quiet authority. Snow’s eyes tracked his every move.
She swallowed hard, forcing her focus back to the manuals then a soft, private smile curved her lips. I followed her gaze and saw she was staring at Cupid’s manual copy.
My jaw clenched. The air in the perfectly conditioned hall suddenly felt too thin.
“Sir, the budget,” a sharply dressed woman from the Godlike financial team prompted. Yenda nodded toward Cupid.
“Oh, yes. I heard you’re overseeing finances now. Congratulations.”
She extended her hand across the table for a celebratory shake.
Heavy silence fell.
I stilled, watching everything unfold.
Cupid glanced at the offered hand, then lowered his gaze to the budget documents. Snow went rigid beside me, waiting, breath held to see if he’d make physical contact with another woman.

He didn’t. He simply reviewed the papers and signed, pen scratching decisively across the page.
The woman swallowed, recognizing the silent rejection, and smoothed it over with a professional smile.
“Well, I’m from the financial department,” she continued, accepting the signed documents. “To welcome you properly, how about dinner at…”
“We’ll be fully occupied with the charity donations, ma’am,” Snow interjected softly, smile unwavering as she turned to Cupid. “Right?”
He was quiet a beat, those striking green eyes fixed solely on her with an intensity that unsettled me. A strange, terrifying tenderness I couldn’t rival.
“Yeah,” he finally said, voice low and resonant, vibrating through the room like quiet thunder. No sane person could resist that tone.
I don’t think I’d ever actually heard him speak before. Even during the public speeches, when he was meant to share the stage with Snow, he hadn’t bothered to approach the podium.
Footsteps approached again. The door opened.
“Boss?” His assistant called, urgency sharper now, phone still ringing insistently.
Cupid glanced at Yenda, who nodded permission as he murmurs.
“Well,” Yenda said, clearing his throat, “let’s conclude here. Cupid and Snow will handle the remaining details. We’ll reconvene after the donations to review everything by the event’s close.”
Agreement rippled around the table. People began rising.
I turned to Snow, ready to speak, but she was already standing gathering both manuals. Her gaze flicked silently to Cupid.
They shared a look, a brief, wordless signal before she slipped out first.
He waited a heartbeat, then followed.
I sat frozen in my chair a few seconds longer, trying to convince myself Snow’s choices were none of my business. Viviana was back. The woman who still held my heart.
But the more I tried to dismiss the growing dread, the tighter it gripped me.

I set my jaw, stood, and headed out after her.
Damn it. I was still her husband.
