I was pacing restlessly in my bedroom when the sound of a car pulling into the driveway reached me.

Hurriedly, I rushed to the window to peer out, and upon seeing it was him, I dashed outside, arriving in the living room just in time for him to walk in.

He stood briefly at the entrance, adjusted his glasses, and walked straight up to me.

“What’s going on, Neils? You told me

now?”

“It’s harder than you think,” he said angrily before walking away to flop onto the couch, his fingers trembling visibly. I slowed my steps.

He seemed in far more trouble and panic than I was. I walked up to stand before him, wondering what was wrong.

“Mr. Lin’s case will be reopened, Ares. Be prepared.”

My knees suddenly went weak at that. I sat beside him, glaring in disbelief.

“What are you saying? Didn’t you promise the case would stay closed. shut forever? You said Feroz had it under control!”

“Until he doesn’t,” he snapped back, jerking away from me to pace briefly. Then he slowed and turned to look at me. “In order to divert H.O.W.L.’s attention from Feroz, we targeted Marlik. We tried to pin the drugs they found in the warehouse on him, but it made little impact. It failed.”

“How do you mean it failed?”

He glared at me before gritting out,

“The men Feroz sent to Marlik are dead. One body was found just a block away, which tells one single truth. Marlik… I’ve seen that man’s file. I know him from years ago when I sentenced him to life imprisonment. He’s… he’s powerless when it comes to smarts and connections. He couldn’t have handled those men alone, nor would he have the brain to instigate H.O.W.L. into reopening Mr. Lin’s case.”

I was restless by now.

I sighed shakily, unable to keep calm. I knew once the case reopened, I wouldn’t be safe. How was I going to handle this?

“So what now?” I asked Neils, who slowed his pacing to settle his gaze on me. “What now?”

“Feroz is allowing the case to reopen. H.O.W.L. staff will handle it. Eshan Frost will be on it. This case will be different, long, bloody, painful, and difficult. But they won’t find the real culprit in Mr. Lin Krates’s death. You know why? Because Feroz has a plan. His top plan is to make sure one person isn’t part of the investigation.”

Hearing this, I waited for him to name the person. He stared at me with a nod, as if confirming I was guessing right.

“Snow?”

“Yes. Your wife,” he replied. “She might be new in H.O.W.L., but she’s too smart. All the recent solved cases were because of her. With her off the case, no other profiler will untangle the knot.”

I nodded slowly, asking carefully, trying not to sound scared, sad, or angry.

“So… what does Feroz have in mind to do to Snow to keep her off the case?”

The question hung, met with silence. I looked at Neils in awe.

“You can’t kill Snow. Never.”

Neils searched my eyes in quietness. A small, brief, evil smile curled at the corner of his lips before it vanished under a cold haze.

She announced it happily, but the news froze me.

I asked one of the nurses who did her check–up scan, and I learned Snowflakes is suffering from brain damage.”

My world tilted sharply. I stared at Viviana as she grinned through the news.

“They said her brain began to shrink due to an overdose of some pills. It shrank her womb first, and now it’s moved to her brain, squeezing it. She has options. A surgery to remove her womb so the brain can heal, or move to a place that gives her peace by before she heals from her first transformation.
