It was a grand dinner to welcome her back, as the Godlike family did yearly. I arrived at nig late, and it wasn’t really my intention.
I had sniffed too much of the drugs yesterday and slept heavily off. It was Desmond’s intens calling that finally forced me out.
Standing in the open, softly lighted hall that overlooked the dining area, I swallowed hard. I could hear the giggles from ahead and the light chattering of spoons.
The last time I was here, I had left in anger, in silence, and deep disappointment and yet aga here I was, honoring my father’s words for me to come tonight.
Silently, I headed toward the dining hall, appearing just in time to impose a perfect decorum with my mere presence.
They were all her. The Godlikes, the Alpha and the Luna with their biological four children seated around the table.
Grandma was there, and Desmond sat too, with an empty chair reserved for me right next to
him.
Standing there, I felt her gaze shift and settle directly on me. Luna Sash. The last time we met was around this time last year, when she had offered me a dry grin and invited me to dinner which I had politely refused, telling her the mafia job came first.
She had been angry at my refusal, and now I could tell she still held the grudge.
I bowed in greeting, walking slowly to my grandma to hug her from behind, kissing her cheek. tenderly.
“You are here,” she said tenderly, and I nodded before making my way to my seat, rubbing Almira’s arm gently on the way.
I settled at last in silence, and tension fell with it just as I had expected. Just as it had been for years, from the very beginning.
“You didn’t make the donation that was supposed to be done today,” Yenda’s voice came first.
I nodded, reaching for my cutlery.

“That isn’t an excuse,” he retorted. “She is delaying the process. Everything has to be done before we step into Christmas, for fuck’s sake.”
“Once she gets better, we’ll do the needful,” I dismissed him smoothly, reaching for the glass cup, before he suddenly banged his fist on the table.
“Mother, you see what I told you? You see how he’s been growing nerves ever since Dad mad him in charge of finances?” he accused, reporting to his mother, who still had her eyes on me quietly staring.
Then she lowered her gaze to her plate, shrugging.
“That’s what we get after taking him in from the street. What else do you expect from… a thie
I drank from my glass, reaching for the food and picking with my spoon. The dish tasted like ash on my tongue, and I reached for the glass cup again to swallow it down when her voice
came once more.
“I am filing for your removal as the legal guardian of my daughter, Almira. I do not know how or why Ruis made you in charge of Almira, but I am moving you off. Get ready to sign the handover papers.”
Again, I didn’t speak. I concentrated on my food, taking in the silence and flooding my mind with something else, like her smile. Snow’s. My mother’s warm hug when she came into my arms, and the look of Yasmin. Or Marlik’s laughter.
I tried to eat another bite when she gritted out,
“I should have let him rot in jail.”
Hearing that, I froze my fork hovering over the plate as I looked at her, hoping she’d repeat the words.
“That… that criminal you call your brother, Marlik… I shouldn’t have given my order to have that case stayed open when Ruis asked for my favor. I should have made him rot in jail… forever.”
I swallowed, gulping at her bitter words. She smiled politely before regarding me with contemptuous eyes as if I were filth and nothing more than that same dirty boy who had been brought in here once.
“Sitting around the table with us doesn’t make you a Godlike. Doing all the rituals doesn’t wash vour blood from being a rogue or a thief. You are nothing but those. You understand?”

Silence fell, stretched, in fact and I nodded, agreeing with her because all she said was true.
“Sitting as the chairwoman of justice doesn’t make you a saint or a law–abiding person either murmured back to her.
She went still, eyes flying open in awe that I’d dared talk back. My voice was low, almost lazy.
“You are the worst of them all. You who stand between the bad and the good… are the worst c all.”
“Cupid…” Desmond’s voice came, but I ignored him to continue.
“You act like a saint, polished, as if your hands are clean of blood but between us all here, we know what you are, who you are.”
“How dare you…”
“That position you sit in today, that makes you the chairwoman of justice… do idea who made that happen?” I asked, pinning my gaze to her.

“What the fuck are you talking about?!” Yenda slammed.
I glared at him first.
“How about you ask your mother? Ask her who assassinated her opponent to keep the position vacant for her to ascend.”
Silence rippled. It was a top secret from them all.
“I shouldn’t have said that,” I continued, “but I am sick and tired of you all speaking as if you’d stand on your own two feet without me. The Godlike Legal Empire was created by Father, but those who keep it going are us working in the underground, bursting our asses in the streets night after night to launder in money so you all can wear pearls and diamonds, drive good cars, and be wealthy. But at the end of the day, you spit on us and call us thieves.”
I placed down the cutlery and stared at the water for a few minutes before shaking my head.
“You speak of removing me from being Almira’s guardian… how about you ask your son what he did to make Father take that step?”
Luna Sash turned hurriedly to Yenda, who averted his eyes, unable to hold her gaze.
“In the world of mafia, a lady like Almira is a tool of violation. You see her pretty today, once she goes into that world, all her memories will be wiped, and all that will remain is trauma upon trauma. I have sat in silence for so long, hearing you all call me names. How about I step

I rose from my seat, bowing to Father.

“I’m heading to my loft,” I murmured before turning to the Luna. “And for the record, I wasn’t pick up from the street. I have a family before and even after I become a Godlike.”
I walk off.
Outside, I saw the sky darkening, and a sigh escaped me. It was about to rain.
I got into my car just as my cellphone beeped. I pulled it out to see a message from Snow.
I am at your club, waiting.‘
