By the time the car arrived in the tunnel garage of Cupid’s loft, I was literally hanging on by a thread of thin life.
I couldn’t tell what was wrong with me. All I felt was weakness so profound I could barely stan on my two feet, but I put on a brave face and smiled through it.
He alighted first to grab all the groceries we had bought, then opened the car door for me.
Together we headed toward the elevator, and we ascended into his warm living room where, somehow, I felt more at home than anywhere else.
“You should go to the bedroom,” he said to me. “I’ll drop these in the kitchen and come.”
I was supposed to obey him, but somehow having him out of my sight triggered something. I hated the distance between us, and I followed him from behind.
He paused in the kitchen when he saw I was following. Gently, he placed the groceries on the table and turned fully to me. A small frown curled at the corner of his face.
“Come sit,” he said softly, pulling out a chair.
I lowered myself onto it.
He looked at me for a while before turning to start putting the groceries where they belonged. He got me some soft drink cans, which he moved to the fridge, and focused on the others.
I sat there watching him, ignoring the weakness drowning my bones until slowly my body went limp.
I found myself slipping from the chair. To call out to him became a hard task, and I fluttered my eyes, falling when a sharp whoosh of air slammed.
The next second, I realized I was in his arms.
“Snow, what’s wrong?” he asked in concern.
But I couldn’t respond, not when strength was failing me this much. I clung to him for help, to save me, and he lifted me up at once, heading into his bathroom.
Tenderly, he lowered me into the bathtub. Then he reached for my dress and pulled it off,

leaving me naked. Cupid proceeded to fill the bathtub with cold water. He looked at me as he did, then came to place his palm on my forehead.
“You’re burning up so much,” he said, voice no longer cloaked. It wasn’t wrapped in mystery. He was genuinely worried.
He left the bathtub for only a few seconds, using his speed that left a whoosh of air. Then he returned with a bag of ice, which he poured into the bathtub.
Carefully, he sat down right on the floor beside the tub to take my hand, searching my eyes.
“Cold baths like this help,” he said softly. “It helped us back then when burning up in rogue town. Try to relax, and you’ll be fine.”
He held my hand the entire time, and I nodded, tears gathering in my eyes at how painful it all
was.
How much I was suffering, knowing I didn’t really deserve all this.
He reached to cup my cheek and gave it a soft caress, smiling tenderly at me so I’d know I wasn’t alone, that he was thinking about me, worrying for me. That I meant something to him.
His clothes were getting wet, but he didn’t care. All his focus was on me, and only me.
Time ticked by, and the ice melted into the water. He reached to feel my temple again, and a worried expression returned.
“Let’s get you to bed,” he said softly, washing me up and pulling me out.
He carried me right into the bedroom, settling my head on the soft pillow. Then he came to take my hand, searching my eyes.
“How do you feel? Hmm, Snow?”
I swallowed, feeling my pale lips move even before I made the effort.
“I feel sleepy,” I murmured in great, extreme exhaustion.
He nodded.
“Have you taken your dinner before leaving home?” he asked.
I shook my head slowly in the negative.
I’d left almost immediately, even before any of them recover from the shock that has shook

the whole house. I knew my brothers would try to hold on to me, and I’d hate for them to disagree with Father for the first time because of me.
“We got some… food,” he said. “You should eat it so you can take your pills.”
Hearing that alone turned my stomach inside out, and I shook my head in the negative.
“I don’t want… I don’t want anything.”
“Don’t be stubborn,” he said, voice pleading. “I’ll be right back.”
He rushed over, and I blinked, sighing into the silence of the night that had descended everywhere.
It didn’t take long before he returned, carrying a plate and the paper bag containing my pills.
Gently, he helped me sit up, propping my back against the soft pillows. Then he scooped food with the spoon and held it against my mouth but I looked away, unable to help myself.
Cupid’s eyes followed me tenderly. His palm came to cup my cheek as he searched my eyes.
“Please. Just three… and you’ll take your drugs. Please, hmm?”
He pleaded. He looked so much in concern and that melted my heart. I tried, and I succeeded in eating three full spoonfuls.
When he came with the fourth, I squeezed my face hysterically, and he dropped the spoon hurriedly.
He poured me a cup of water and handed me the pill. As I accepted it, he reached for the paper bag to read it through. Then, as though confirming it was genuine, he watched me take it.
I handed him back the cup, which he set down.
Silence fell as he sat there with me, his hand taking mine tenderly.
Time went by, until he finally lay me down gently, my head on the pillow. When he draped the bed cover over me, I gave him one last glance before slumber dragged me down.
