“I should let you rest, Dad,” I said, forcing a small smile that felt like cracking glass. “I’ll take a bath now.”
“You should. Go on.”
I slipped out of the bedroom, the door clicking shut behind me with a finality that echoed in the hallway.
I leaned against the wall for a second, exhaling shakily, wondering why the Beta of Godlike Pack would meet with the opposition party.
He was supposed to be on Luna Sash’s side, wasn’t he? The question gnawed at me, small, sharp, refusing to let go.
Approaching footsteps pulled me back.
Dove appeared at the top of the stairs, brushing crumbs from her fingers with a casual swipe.
“Father’s in?” she asked.
I nodded.
“Let me pay my greetings and come. We definitely have a lot to talk about, Snowflakes Frost.”
“Yes ma’am,” I joked weakly.
She smiled soft, knowing and walked past me.
I pushed open the door to my bedroom and sighed shakily, trying to drink in the quiet that had finally settled. I walked to the full–length mirror and stood before it.
So much had happened in so little time.
Yet here I was still standing.
Maybe all I needed was Cupid in my life, and I’d become the strongest woman alive.
I smiled at the thought, heart curling in quiet bliss at the reality of him. He’d shown me nothing but love when he stopped by H.O.W.L. hours ago, held me like I was something precious he never wanted to lose.
My phone beeped.
I turned, pulled it from my bag.
Tilly V.
My thumb hovered over the message for a long, trembling moment before I took a deep breath and opened it.

A plea.
One that made my throat close.
I’m outside, Miss Snow.‘
Goosebumps erupted across my skin.
If I didn’t step out, she might freeze in the snow and cold, but she might also wait forever.

Swallowing hard, I slipped past everyone in the living room before they noticed and stepped onto the porch.
She stood a little distance away, under the falling snow.
My heart lodged in my throat as I walked toward her.
Slowly, I looked up.
Tilly V. searched my eyes, pain, sorrow, desperation so raw it stole my breath.
She didn’t speak.
Instead, she reached into her worn bag and pulled out a brown envelope, fingers trembling as she handed it to me.
I held her
gaze
for a moment before tearing it open.
The words inside hit like a physical blow.
I looked up at her slowly. Cold dread sank into my veins.
She swallowed, voice shaking.
“Death by hanging for my sister who is innocent. No proper investigation. No court trial. Just… a sentence. This is unfair. The prosecutor who…”
“She confessed,” I said quietly, taking my brother’s side even as it tore at me. “No one forced her. It was her words that pinned her in H.O.W.L.”
“But between you and me, we know it’s a lie, right? Confession under threat. It doesn’t count.”
I looked away, breath fogging in the cold.
For a long moment I stared into the blank space before turning back to her, my own voice trembling but I blamed it on the snow.
“I wish I could help, but all loose ends are gone. No more strings to reopen Mr. Lins‘ case. Kim Krates, his son, whose words might have made a difference is declared insane. I’m… I’m sorry.”
She went still.

Gradually, tears clouded her eyes.
“So… my sister dies by hanging? Is that… is that it?”
My throat clogged. I lowered my gaze quickly, unable to meet hers.
“There’s nothing a suspended profiler can do. I’m… powerless.”
I handed the envelope back, trying to sound steady.
“I’m sorry.”
I turned to leave.
Her voice followed small, shattering.
“You’re not powerless. You know the right thing to do. You just don’t want to do it.”
I hurried inside and slammed the door shut, shivering, not from cold, but panic.
“Are you okay?”
Mirena’s voice came from behind.
I whirled around. She was alone in the living room.
I nodded, too quickly.
I could hear Dove laughing at something with Sera in the kitchen.
Hurriedly, I made my way to my bedroom only to freeze.
Viviana was inside.
I frowned.
“What are you doing here?”
“We were having a nice time. Father–daughter time. Until you arrived and distracted him. You should leave for the pack where your biological father is.”
She gritted her teeth.
I rolled my eyes, too exhausted for her venom.
