I would have preferred us to meet at the strip club. Somewhere loud, shadowed, where the chaos could drown out everything else.
But here, standing in front of Marlik’s house under the gradual dark sky, the air felt too peaceful. Too gentle. Too dangerously close to hope.
The building rose before me like something out of a dream. Grace, wealth, luxury distilled into clean lines and warm light spilling from every window.
Yet at the back of my mind, the truth gnawed relentlessly. I had failed again. Perhaps I had finally lost my human family for good.
Perhaps I had succeeded only in letting Viviana return and take my place, blood on the wall, Father’s fury. the door slamming behind me like a final verdict.
“Snow?”
Dove’s voice pulled me back.
She had already stepped out of the taxi and stood waiting, arms crossed against the cold, worry etched deep in her face.
Things had happened so fast, blood gushing from Viviana’s temple, the scream, the chaos erupting like a storm I couldn’t outrun. Father’s voice roaring “Get out!” still echoed in my ears. The only name my heart could cling to in the wreckage was Cupid.
I sighed quietly, trembling, and forced my legs to move. I stepped out of the car and stopped short, suddenly aware of the aura humming from the house.
Marlik was here.
I had met him only a handful of times, but each encounter left the same imprint. Steady, guarded power, like a storm held back by sheer will. He was inside. I could feel him.
I swallowed hard.
Cupid had sent me to his rogue family’s home.
Dove touched my arm gently.
“You can go now. I’ll be fine with Cupid,” I told her.
She shook her head, stubborn as ever.
“I have to make sure you’re okay. Besides, your brothers will have my head if they call and I say I left you somewhere. Let’s go in. It’s cold.”

I nodded numbly and followed her up the driveway. The fountain sang softly, loving, peaceful and a small, unwilling smile tugged at my lips despite everything.
The energy here was warm. Friendly. Tinged with sorrow that lingered like old perfume.
Then the front door opened.
An elderly man appeared, clearly the butler, his posture impeccable, expression polite but wary.
“Good evening,” I said quietly.
He didn’t respond at first. His eyes swept over me. Hood up, jacket zipped high, then his brows creased in a frown.
“I… I’m here to wait for Cupid. He said he’ll be here soon.”
“But you can’t…”
“Let her through.”
The voice came from inside. Deep, calm, unmistakable.
Desmond.
“She’s his woman.”
The butler’s face went pale in an instant. He bowed so low I thought he might touch the ground.
“You are welcome, madam.”
I frowned in surprise but returned a small bow and stepped inside, Dove close behind.
Desmond stood in the living room, arms crossed, gaze flicking to me only briefly before returning to the window. He didn’t speak. I hadn’t expected him to.
The house was magnificent,
Warm wood floors, soft lighting, the faint scent of cedar and something floral. The energy wrapped around me. Friendly, almost tender, yet threaded with quiet sorrow that clung to the air like memory.
I drifted toward the back window, drawn to the view of the garden lit by low lanterns, when movement behind me made me pause.
I turned.
An elderly woman stood there. Long hair plaited in several braids, strands of gray catching the light, eyes the most beautiful, tender shade I had ever seen.
Goosebumps raced across my skin.
I didn’t need to think twice.

This was her.
The mother who had taken Cupid in after he lost his own. The woman he spoke of with nothing but
reverence.
She held a tablecloth in her hands, fresh from the kitchen, perhaps, and her gaze moved from Dove to me, curious, anxious, wondering.
I held my breath, unsure how to begin.
Then the sound of a car interrupted the tension.
Footsteps approached.
Cupid appeared in the entrance.
He paused just for a heartbeat, eyes finding mine across the room.
Then he walked forward, straight to his mother, and extended his hand toward me.
I hesitated only for a second before taking it.
