Snowflakes
“She is so posh,” Marlik murmured, voice low, almost under his breath.

I paused mid–bite, fork hovering. My eyes flicked to him. He met my gaze for one brief, assessing second then looked away, as if he hadn’t meant for the words to carry.
I swallowed, suddenly aware of every eye at the table.
“She was born into a wealthy home,” Cupid said smoothly, voice calm but edged with quiet defense. “What did you expect?”
He nodded at me, gentle encouragement to keep eating.
The meal itself was exquisite. Rich, comforting flavors I hadn’t tasted in what felt like forever.
I’d nearly cleared my plate despite thinking I had no appetite left. Desmond sat at the far end beside Cupid, while I was placed next to Mother. She’d insisted on having me close.
Dove sat beside me, facing the men across the table like we were two small islands holding the line.
“You want more?” Mother’s voice was tender, her hand already reaching for the serving spoon.
I shook my head quickly. “No, thank you.”
She smiled, sweet, warm, and turned the same question to Dove.
“No, ma’am. Thank you,” Dove replied, polite but quiet.
I tried to refocus, to force another bite, but the food had lost its taste. The lingering ache in refused to loosen. Kashi’s message burned behind my eyes.

A family meeting has been called.
The last time we’d had a full family meeting was five years ago when the decree came down that daughters from biological bloodlines must return to their original home.
I still remembered the silence that followed the announcement. The way no one looked at me.
I wondered what tomorrow night would bring now.
With my heart twisting, I glanced sideways. Cupid was watching me across the table, far enough that no one else might notice, but close enough that I felt the weight of his gaze like a hand on my shoulder. He could tell. He always could.
I lowered my eyes to my plate and tried to eat.
The domestic staff moved silently around us, friendly, polite, never intrusive. I wouldn’t take their warmth for granted. Not ever.

“How long have you both been courting?” Mother asked suddenly, softly, unable to hold back her curiosity any longer.
I turned to her. She was smiling, eyes bright, waiting.
“Um…” My gaze flickered to Cupid. He waited too, patient, steady. “A few weeks.”
“Really?” Her brows lifted, delighted.
“Yes.” I dropped my eyes to my water glass but didn’t drink. I knew more was coming.
“You… you’re from which pack?” she asked gently. “I can feel your wolf spirit, but… I can’t sense your wolf.”
“Mooncrest,” I answered, looking up with a small, sad smile. “Actually… my birth story is a peculiar one. When I was born, I was switched at the hospital. I grew up in a human household, the Frosts. But originally, I’m a Mooncrester.”
Her eyes widened, surprised, fascinated.
“That’s quite a story. How did you find out later?”
“My… the sister who was switched with me, the real human was prepared for a ritual. She didn’t pass it. Her blood showed she was human. A Frost. They came to the Frost doorstep and… the moment they saw me, they knew. The ritual embraced me as the Moon Goddess’s daughter. That’s how we found out.”
She smiled, lovely at first, then tinged with sadness.
“Your wolf hasn’t returned because you lived too long among humans. That’s why you can’t summon her?”
She understood perfectly. I nodded slowly, overwhelmed by her quiet precision.
“The priestess says I’ll be able to summon her once I find my mate,
“But I believe making the necessary rituals will grant you back your werewolf. So far have you seen your mate?”
“Not yet.”
I tried to smile, but the look in her eyes made it fade. She had stopped eating. Her gaze held mine, gentle, searching, heavy with something unspoken.
“So… if you find your mate… you will not…”
