The silence in the car after we left the Celestial Ground was absolute. Thick, suffocating, the kind that presses against your eardrums until every small sound feels like an intrusion.

No one spoke. No one even breathed loudly. I sat in the front passenger seat beside Cupid now, Desmond quiet in the back, each of us staring out our own window as though the night outside could somehow absorb the weight of what we’d just learned.

How much cruelty can one life hold? I hadn’t done anything to anyone. Not really. I was a child when it started, too young to understand why eyes followed me with suspicion, why whispers started whenever I walked past. Why do they hate me this much?

What was my offense? What invisible crime had I committed that made someone, my own family decide I should never know the moon’s touch, never feel the shift of fur and bone, never answer the call that every other wolf in my bloodline answered without question?

I stared out at the dark highway blurring past, trying to push the sadness down, trying to outrun the sharp, sudden terror of leaving this world too young.

I hadn’t planned to cry. But the tears came anyway hotly, silent, stinging the corners of my eyes until I had to blink hard to keep them from falling.

The car slowed. Stopped.

Cupid’s hand found my wrist gentle, careful and turned me toward him.

I sniffed, trying to pull myself together, but his eyes stopped me cold.

They were soft, full of so much love and quiet fury and aching worry that my breath hitched.

He tugged me closer without a word, folding me against his chest, one hand cradling the back of my head while the other rubbed slow, steady circles between my shoulder blades.

Come here,he murmured against my temple, pressing a kiss therelong, lingering. We will get your dad to love and accept you. If he won’t do it willinglyHis voice dropped, edged with steel. We’ll use force.

I pulled back just enough to search his face. He was dead serious, jaw set, eyes burning with the kind of resolve that didn’t bend. I managed a small, watery smile and nodded.

I’ll text him now,I whispered. ButI doubt if that will make any difference Cupid. Alpha Herold Mooncrest never love me.

I eased out of his arms, pulled my phone from my bag, and opened a new message to Alpha Herold of Mooncrest pack.

The words felt too small for what they carried.

Dad, can we talk? It’s about me getting my werewolf back.

My thumb hovered over Send for a long heartbeat, heart hammering, throat tight then I pressed it.

The little delivered appeared beneath the text like a period at the end of a sentence I wasn’t ready to finish.

I exhaled shakily, leaned back in the seat, and glanced at my watch. Still so much night left.

I’m driving you home,Cupid said softly. You look exhausted.

I shook my head.

I need to go back to H.O.W.L. There’s too much still to do.

Before he could argue, my phone rang, sharp, insistent.

Eshan.

I answered immediately.

We found the bastard,he said without preamble, voice tight with controlled fury. Ossy J. Fortythree. Retired security guard. Right now his location ping puts him at the airport. Shine X. He’s probably trying to flee. We’ve already put a hold on outbound flights, but I’m not sure it’ll stick long enough.

My blood turned to ice.

Wwhat airport?

Shine X.

I didn’t even have time to process before Cupid slammed the car into gear and floored it.

The engine roared; the world snapped forward in a blur of speed and adrenaline. I clutched the seatbelt with white knuckles as my phone slipped from my fingers and clattered to the floorboard.

Cupid drove like the car was an extension of his body, precise, ruthless, fearless.

He’d mentioned once, early on, that he loved cars, that he knew his way around them.

I hadn’t understood what that really meant until now. He carved through traffic like it wasn’t there, leaving other vehicles in the dust, closing impossible distances in heartbeats.

By the time we screeched into the shortterm parking at Shine X, the overhead announcement was already echoing through the terminal.

Final boarding call for Flight XA472 to

I scrambled out, legs shaky, already redialing Eshan as I ran.

I’m at Shine X,I said the second he picked up. Is he boarding?

Yes. I have inform the security guards over there to

Cupid was already moving, long strides eating up distance, Desmond right behind him. I followed, heart slamming against my ribs.

Heads turned as we pushed through the crowd. Gasps rippled outward.

My God, that’s Cupid Godlike.

Isn’t that Snow?

What are they doing together?

We ignored every whisper, every stare. Cupid scanned the boarding line with predatory focus until a man in a cheap gray hoodie suddenly broke away and bolted toward the far corridor marked Staff & Crew Only.

Cupid slipped into the flow of passengers like smoke, gone in an instant.

I ran after him.

The corridor twisted, narrowed, became a dead end lined with service doors. Ossy J skidded to a halt, realizing too late there was nowhere left to go. He spun.

Our eyes met.

Memory slammed into me like a fist, grainy flashes of that night four years ago, the smell of wet concrete and fear, the weight of hands that weren’t gentle.

Is it him?Cupid asked softly from right beside me.

I swallowed. Nodded once.

That was all he needed.

Ossy J yanked a knife from his boot. Small, serrated, trembling in his grip.

Don’t come any closer,he snarled, swinging it in a wild arc. You’ll be so fucking dead

Cupid moved like wind and violence fused into one motion.

One second the knife was in Ossy J’s hand. The next it clattered to the floor.

Cupid had already closed the distance, inhumanly fast, expert, lethal. He twisted Ossy J’s wrist until bone cracked; the man screamed. Before the sound finished, Cupid snatch the knife on the floor and drove it deep into Ossy J’s palm cruelly.
