“Eshan?” I called from behind, stepping out of the cop car.

He spun around so fast it looked painful, froze for a heartbeat, eyes wide and wild with panic. Then he was moving, rushing over, arms wrapping around me like I might disappear if he let go even for a second.

“My goodness, I thought I lost you,” he whispered against my hair, voice cracking. He pulled back just enough to search my face, hands framing my cheeks. “How did you get to Shine X so fast?”

Before I could answer, the rear door opened. Ossy J was dragged out, cuffs biting into his wrists, left eye already swollen shut, blood smeared across his split lip and chin.

Eshan went still. His gaze flicked from the man’s ruined face to me, brows drawing together in stunned confusion.

“He was trying to flee,” I said quietly, “and he… slipped and fell.”

Ossy J’s good eye snapped to me wide with disbelief, knowing full well I was lying through my teeth.

“That is false. She is…”

“Take the cuffs off him and escort him inside,” Eshan cut in, voice flat and final. He tugged me gently away from the man, turning me toward him. “Are you okay? Hmm?”

The worry in his eyes was so raw it stole my breath for a second. I nodded, reaching up to squeeze his hand.

“Let’s talk later,” I murmured. “I have something to tell you.”

He searched my face, clearly aching to demand answers right now but duty was already pulling him back. He exhaled sharply, gave me one last long look, then guided me toward the entrance.

Before we stepped inside, I glanced over my shoulder.

Cupid’s car was still parked in the shadows of the lot. He hadn’t moved. Through the tinted glass I couldn’t see his face, but I knew he was watching. Always watching.

I sighed shaky, tired, and followed Eshan into H.O.W.L building.

Upstairs, Ossy J had already been rushed straight into interrogation, no delay, no paperwork stall.

The moment I walked into the Echo 8 office, the team rose almost as one. Sera, Mr. Gerald, Vast, everyone except Quince, who was missing.

“You okay?” Sera asked first, crossing the room quickly, voice soft.

Inodded. “Yeah.”

Mr. Gerald’s eyes narrowed slightly.

I looked away, pulse kicking at the memory of how fast Cupid’s people moved. Too fast. Always too fast.

“Guys come on,” Quince’s voice cut through from the doorway. “Fast.”

We hurried after him into the observation room.

Through the glass, Ossy J was already unraveling, pacing in tight circles, teeth gritted, snarling at the table like it had personally offended him.

“Really?” Eshan’s voice came calm and cold through the speakers. He reached for the file, flipped it open to the lab report page showing Ossy J’s semen match from four years ago. “Then explain this. You’re innocent of the Dark Alley case?”

Ossy J swallowed hard. The defiance flickered, then died. He knew the evidence was ironclad.

Eshan leaned in, voice dropping to that dangerous, almost friendly tone he used when he smelled blood in the water.

“How about you tell me what happened that night? Let’s see what we can do. Cooperate and maybe you walk away with a reduced sentence…”

Silence stretched thickly, suffocating.

We all held our breath.
