When becoming a mafia man, we go through procedures. Surgeries. Multiple failsafes to alert us to danger.
Among them is the chip that tracks our location at all times so we can be found if things go wrong.
Among them also is the one that detects when our personal cellphone is being forcibly unlocked. It would look suspicious to carry a burner in public; this way, the real phone stays clean on the surface.
I stood in the doorway, watching her, watching what she was doing with my phone and said nothing. Without a word, I turned back into the bathroom to finish my shower. I took my time under the water, forcing the anger down, refusing to let it swallow me whole.
When I finally stepped out, I grabbed a towel, dried off, and walked back into the bedroom. I ignored her completely, dressed in simple shorts and a T–shirt, then rubbed the towel roughly through my wet hair before returning to the bed.
I lay down beside her. She had already set my phone aside the moment I caught her, but her eyes stayed on me, wide, searching,
silent.
I unlocked the phone with my thumb and handed it to her. I wasn’t stupid enough to leave anything traceable where an ordinary person could find it.
“Check whatever you want,” I said quietly.
She looked straight into my eyes searching, wordless.
“What are you looking for? I can help you search if you tell me.” I kept my voice even. “Is this about the cameras in your house? They were already installed before you moved in. You’re my woman. What are you so worried about?”
Still, she said nothing. I began to pull away from the bed.
“You did that to Ares, didn’t you?”
I paused, frowning slowly in disbelief.
“is that why you’ve been mad at me? Why you’ve been so distant ever since I came to check on you this evening?”
“Cupid…”
“Is that why you were checking my phone? Because of your ex? Why? Do you still care about him?”
She went still, exhaustion swimming in her eyes as she searched mine.
I hated that look, hated that she was keeping me at arm’s length because of that worthless man I could have taken the cameras upsetting her
I stood up fully, grabbed my phone, and headed for the door but she sat up, voice soft but firm
“I’m just curious.”
I turned back to her.

‘His transport van from the courthouse to H.O.W.L. was delayed. When he arrived, he was covered in blood. I just… was it you?”
Silence fell heavy between us. I studied her face, really studied it, wondering who that concern was truly for.
Why? Did I do too much by punching the man who hurt my girlfriend?” Her shoulders sagged at my words, and I hated it even nore. “Now you’re worried about him?”
No!” she snapped suddenly, then looked away, blinking back exhaustion. “My God, Cupid, why would I care about Ares? It’s you ‘m worried about.”
he rose from the bed and walked to me, cupping my cheek gently. I didn’t know what was wrong, but Snow looked more worried han I’d ever seen her. Raw, almost desperate.
I don’t want you to get blood on your hands. Forgive me if it sounds silly, but I’d rather you stay a model, stay pretty than have lood on your hands.
This whole mess with me, Ares, Viviana, Feroz… please don’t step into it. I don’t want you to end up with a criminal record. I can’t ear it if anything unlawful gets tied to you.”
he let her hands fall to her sides and walked back to the bed, flopping down and dragging her fingers through her hair in quiet
ustration.
I had Doctor Catina leave my name off the list of people she drugged on Ares‘ orders today in court, Cupid. And I did it all for you, or your name.” She looked up at me, eyes tender and pleading. “I don’t know… I feel like you want commitment, and I want it uilt on trust and love. Never blood. Never injustice. I love you. Really. And I don’t want you doing something behind my back… omething bad… for me.”
he sighed softly, climbed fully under the covers, and turned her back to me. I watched her brush away tears she thought! ouldn’t see, quiet sorrow because I’d already crossed that line.
I’m going to sleep now,” she murmured.
swallowed hard.
fithout another word, I walked out and closed the door softly behind me.
rom the balcony railing, I saw them all looking up curious, listening. They’d heard every word of the argument.
descended the stairs and dropped onto the couch.
Look who’s sleeping on the couch tonight,” Desmond murmured.
shot him a glare, but he passed me a glass of whiskey anyway. I took it and downed a long quip
