Chapter 360

Cupid

He is an Alpha, Cupid. Still is. In combat you will win, but once he shifts, you won’t. Be careful.

Desmond’s warning keeps ringing in my ears as I pull over to the abandoned backyard spot of H.O.W.L.

From the front, the place is packed to the brim. People, cameras, chaos but back here it’s silent, forgotten.

To reach the lowest floor from this entry point, I have to pass through two gates. The system and map already laid it out clearly.

I reach for my mask, pull it low over my face, stare down at the manhole cover in the middle of the road for a long beat, then lift the heavy metal lid and slide inside.

True to Snow’s earlier words, I land in water that swallows my boots instantly. I wade forward anyway, the earpiece secure, the commotion from outside muffled but constant in my ear.

I move ahead, eyes flashing in the dimness, every sense straining, listening for shifts in the water, for any sound that doesn’t belong.

I reach the first sealed gate the map highlighted. Water has pooled and stagnated around it for who knows how long; rust clings thick to the mechanism.

I unroll my tools, grip the handle, and pour every ounce of my wolf strength into it. The gate finally gives with a loud, protesting creak.

The instant it opens, a wall of trapped water gushes out, slamming into me and swallowing me whole.

I’m pulled under, dragged backward, tumbling in the dark current. I fight my way forward, swimming hard toward the second gate buried deeper underwater.

I dive, lungs burning, empty of air. My hands find the handle. I jerk it viciously until it yields.

Another rush of water surges, swaying me violently, but I clamp my grip on the metal bars and hold fast. When the torrent finally settles, I swim through, rising, rising, until my head breaks the surface. I gulp huge, desperate breaths.

I float on my back for a brief moment, chest heaving then Desmond’s voice cuts through again.

Snow is almost at Pinky’s location now, boss. You might want to move.

I set my jaw tight, roll onto my stomach, push to my feet, and start walking fast.

I emerge into the first silent hall. Electrical panels, rusted metal conduits, shadows thick enough to hide anything. I bypass them quickly and step onto the stairs.

There I slow, waiting for Desmond’s next direction.

Don’t take the elevator. You’ll alert Feroz.

I nod to myself and head up the stairs, water dripping off me in steady trails. I reach the second floor. The air here reeks of sweat, fear, confinement. It’s dark, oppressive. Ahead, rows of cells stretch into the gloom.

That crazy man, not so different from my own father, the kind who lays hands on women, the lovely creatures we men are supposed to protect with everything we have. The thought twists like a blade in my gut.

How long do I have to reach Snow?

Just a few minutes,he replies.

That’s enough for me to kill someone.

I move toward the cells, mask firmly in place, identity sealed. Other prisoners stir as I pass, whispers, hands reaching through bars but I keep walking. I bypass one cell, pause, then backtrack slightly.
