The instant I slip out of Sera’s office and pretend I’m heading to the restroom, another cry slices through the air raw and desperate from yet another person Feroz’s man has dragged in.

1 force myself to ignore it, already deep inside the crooked air vent above the ceiling, the cold metal pressing against my skin as t crawl forward.

I take the exact corner Desmond instructed, turning precisely when he tells me to, all while feeling Pinky Pie’s energy growing stronger ahead like a quiet pull drawing me closer. I’m so close. I can feel it thrumming in my chest.

Just then a call interrupts my hushed exchange with Desmond. Eshan. I answer immediately.

“Snow.” His voice is heavy with dread. “The director will open the doors soon. What is your situation?”

I pause mid–crawl, heart slamming to a stop, sweat dripping from my forehead and stinging my eyes in the tight, airless space. I don’t hesitate or debate. I trust Eshan.

“I’m moving up toward your office where Pinky Pie is.”

A sudden, thick pause. Then his voice returns, lower, as though he’s stepped away to a safer distance where no one can overhear.

“You can’t go up there unless you have directions, Snow.”

“I do. I have to keep moving now,” I say firmly.

He exhales sharply. “Be fast. Pinky is on the prosecutor floor, exactly in my office. I think she’s hiding under my desk or something. Once you get there, call me. I’ll alert the director. I’ll buy you some time. Okay?”

“Okay.”

I disconnect, and almost instantly Desmond’s call comes through. I answer right away.

“Cupid is up on the fifth floor, away from you,” he says urgently. “He’s closing in.”

I keep crawling, muscles aching, when a sudden loud banging erupts from below, heavy, deliberate thuds.

I freeze, reach for a narrow slit in the vent roof, and peer down. One of Feroz’s men stands in the office beneath me, people forced to their knees in front of him, a gun steady in his hand.

“We will have her soon, Sir. Do not worry. She will be dead once the door opens.”

I go completely frozen. They have an informant. Ice floods my veins. I start to move again when he pauses, listening to the voice on the other end.

“Are you sure? She has left the office?” Another beat. “I will inform Alpha Feroz immediately.”

He rushes out. I go utterly still. How did he know I’d left the office? Did… did Eshan tell him just now?

“Snow?” Desmond’s voice pulls me back to reality. “Keep going. You’re almost there.”

I bite my lower lip hard and push forward, sweat after sweat, until I finally reach the ventilation cover above Eshan’s side of the floor. I lift it carefully and drop down as silently as possible, landing in a soft crouch.

My fingers wrap around the doorknob when Desmond speaks again.

“There is no one there besides Pinky. The door is locked. Cupid will get there soon. Wait quietly for him.”

I nod to myself, twist the knob. It turns and step inside. The room is empty, unnaturally quiet. I move softly toward the desk Eshan described.

Pinky is curled underneath it. She freezes when she sees me, then scrambles out and throws herself into my arms, hugging me so fiercely it feels like the first time in a million years.

She pulls back just enough to frantically search my hands, my arms, my body for any sign of injury, then crushes me in another desperate hug.

“How did you get here?” she whispers.

I let out a shaky sigh.

“Just… someone.”

She studies my face, sees the doubt clouding my eyes. “You’re suspicious too, right?”

I meet her gaze. “Sera received a call and left the building. Feroz appeared seconds later in her office.”

“Eshan escorted me here, then got a call and left the building. Then all the doors and windows shut at once. What do you think?”

I shake my head slowly, walking to the nearest chair and sinking down because my knees are throbbing from the crawl.

“I don’t know, Pinky. But I know one thing: Feroz will be here soon. Maybe before he arrives… we should…”

“No need. Help will come soon.” She says it with absolute certainty.

I look at her in confusion. Why does she sound so sure?

“My mom enrolled me into a security system. Those men don’t fail. They will come. Let’s stick together…”
