“I do not think you should go home now, Snow. It is ridiculous,” my father says after me as we enter the living room I stop and turn to settle my gaze on him. “You can’t go. Why would you even want to stay alone in that house anyway?”

“I am not alone, Dad, and you shouldn’t worry about me. It’s… it’s weird to see you concerned about me

He stops at that, knowing exactly what I mean. This is the same living room where he was cruel to me. The same space where he stared down at me multiple times and neglected me.

He looks at me for a long, silent moment. Our eyes meet, and he nods, setting his jaw.

“I know I have been a bad father in the past,” he says quietly. “That was because I never knew you were my daughter until the truth came out. I know that gives me no real right over you, but you are my daughter, and I have every right to tell you what is right and safe for you.”

“Which is?” I ask quietly.

He doesn’t speak. Perhaps it’s not just going home he wants to stop. Perhaps it’s going to him. Cupid.

He turns away, and my words stop him in his tracks.

“You don’t like Cupid?” He freezes. “Why? Because he is a rogue?”

“Rogue has nothing to do with anything,” he murmurs, turning back to look at me.

“So why don’t you want me to go to his house? You haven’t even met him and you don’t like him?” I sigh shakily, running my fingers through my hair. “I don’t care what you think. I love him. We love each other, and he is my mate.”

Announcing it aloud makes him go completely still, but I add one final word.

“Good night.”

I hurry out before he can say anything else and step into the cold night, shivering instantly against the chill. I stop to think how I’ll get home, until the reality settles in. I have my wolf now. I can definitely sprint.

I make to try when my father’s voice reaches me again.

“Give it a rest for now.” He walks closer and hands me a car key. “You will be sick soon from the transformation. Be prepared. Try to use as little of your powers as possible.”

With that he walks away, leaving me alone under the night sky. I blink down at the key, then walk toward the luxury car waiting nearby. I slide in, pull out of Mooncrest, and head back home.

After a block I drive past the dark alley, and somehow the simple dread still lingers. I look away quickly, accelerating fast to leave it behind, until at last I arrive home.

When I turn off the engine, I lift my gaze toward the house. There is a light on inside. For that I go still.
