The morning sun spills over me in a way that pleases the Moon Goddess. I shift gently, sighing, only for my palm to meet the solid warmth of his chest.
For a moment I pause, then flutter my eyelids open to see him. Cupid. Lying still beside me.
His eyes are already open, watching me. I can tell he didn’t sleep a wink all night. He had spent it guarding my sleep. We are tangled in the bed now, and I feel a delicious soreness from our lovemaking last night that still lingers, wearing me down in the sweetest way.
My cheeks flush red at the memory, but then his fingertip comes to caress my cheek quietly, reverently, as though I am something sacred and infinitely precious.
“I love you, Snow. I love you too much,” he confesses.
I go still at the words, a confession in broad daylight. My heart warms, flooding with light, and I move up to nestle my head in the crook of his arm. He pulls me closer, our bodies hot beneath the duvet. It is blissful. Just him and me here alone, wrapped in each other’s arms, pure bliss until his cellphone pierces the peace, ringing sharply.
Gently he reaches for it to check the screen. Whatever he sees there makes him tenderly pull away.
“Please…” He starts to ask for understanding, but I’ve already drawn back, a flicker of anger and jealousy rising in my chest. He glances at me briefly before answering.
“Father,” he says into the receiver. Alpha Ruis’s voice comes through so loud I can hear every word without the speaker on.
“Come here, Cupid. Let’s have a perfect conversation.”
It sounds like he is on some kind of bind, like Cupid has done something wrong. Cupid doesn’t speak for a long moment, then
murmurs,
“I will be on my way.”
He disconnects and looks at me, but I turn away, getting up from the bed. He is leaving. Leaving me.
“I should… I should get going,” he murmurs.
I nod small. He rises, heads to the bathroom to shower and brush while freturn to the bed and lie there, staring at the ceiling.
When he returns, he walks to the closet to dress, rubbing a towel through his damp hair to dry it. When he is fully dressed, he settles his gaze on me but I look away, pulling the bed cover over myself. I wish he would stay with me all day. But duty is calling
him.
He senses my anger and walks closer, settling on the edge of the bed.
“I will be back tonight… so we can talk.”
I lift my gaze to him at that. Talk. Yes. He knows we have so much to say on how he got into H.O.W.L., how much access he has to systems, how he is so skilled. That is not the life of an ordinary model.

“What are you doing today?” he asks tenderly, cupping my cheek in his palm.
I shake my head. “Nothing. I will just…”
I’m still speaking when my cellphone rings.
Quietly I reach for it. Eshan.

That name and the wound it carries. Yesterday I told him I was heading to Pinky, and the next second, a call went out to Feror’s men. That was how they found me. If it hadn’t been for Cupid… perhaps I would have been raped again.
I answer. His voice comes through.
