She caught the bouquet. The moment the flowers landed in her hands, her face lit up with uncontainable happiness.

I managed a smile her way, small, strained then slowly looked around. People were clapping for us, beaming, caught up in the romance of it all.

It was an extravagant, breathtakingly wealthy wedding. Rocco Frost had outdone himself as the groom.

From the gold–embossed invitations to the grandest hall in the city, every detail screamed old money and unapologetic opulence.

The crystal chandeliers, the cascading floral arches, the tables groaning under silver and silk. He looked happy, no, excited.

His eyes bright with something fierce and unguarded. And Sera… I couldn’t even find words. She was the most radiant, most genuinely joyful bride I had ever seen, glowing like she had finally claimed the life she’d waited years for.

I sighed quietly, the sound lost in the music and laughter, and slipped away to have a cigarette.

I wandered to a quiet garden tucked behind the venue.

Desmond was already there, seated on the low stone pavement, cigarette dangling between his fingers.

Smoke curled lazily upward in the evening air. I sighed again and settled beside him without a word. We smoked in silence for a while, two, three cigarettes until I finally broke it.

“How’s Father doing?”

“Bad,” he murmured, exhaling a slow plume. “Stroke, the doctor said. An Alpha suffering something like that… it looks like a cruel joke.” He paused, then looked at me sidelong. “It’s the poison you shot into him, right?”

“Right,” I murmured, voice flat. I took another drag. “How’s Luna Sash?”

“Left the pack. Went back to her house. Beta Sky’s been practically living there with her now. Rumors are flying through the pack that they’re dating.” He flicked ash from his cigarette. “Grandma’s been taking care of Uncle. Lindy and Catherine left for their husbands‘ house. My mom and dad… they want me to marry Nara. I turned it down flat. Told them I’ll marry whoever I want, be with whoever I choose or they’ll lose me forever.”

“That’s a hell of a threat,” I said softly, blowing smoke into the air. “Aunt Bloom will definitely be scared.”

“She is. She begged Dad to let me have my way.” He glanced at me then, eyes narrowing slightly. “Godlike Legal Empire’s lost so much fortune, boss. The mafia members scattered completely. The place is isolated now, just an empty shell in the underworld.”

I sighed shakily, swallowing down the bitter taste that rose in my throat. Then I felt his gaze settle on me, searching, steady. “What about G–Cloak, boss? Should we keep that business running? It’s legal. We could pivot, work as private security, keep people safe. And upfront, you could keep modeling. This pretty face of yours can’t go to waste.”

I looked at him for a long time, really looked. Wondered what he would do if he ever learned the truth, that I would die tomorrow. That I would lie back in my bed and never rise again. The thought twisted like a blade.

I lowered my gaze. Didn’t answer. Just took another slow drag and let the smoke curl between us.
