I changed the channel in my car just as the news anchor was discussing Ares‘ no–show at court. The next station was already buzzing about the wedding this weekend. I smiled widely, helpless, genuinely happy.
At last. Roc and Sera.
I glanced over at the exclusive invitation resting on the passenger seat, embossed gold on cream cardstock.
A small but extravagantly beautiful ceremony in the grandest hall the city had to offer.
First, a human–law binding for Roc, then the sacred wolf ritual to seal Sera under pack law. My heart lifted at the thought, two people who had waited so long finally claiming each other fully.
But then I slowed the car, foot easing off the gas until I came to a complete stop on the shoulder.
Roc had told me earlier today, when he personally invited Cupid and me to the wedding that Dad was suffering from lung cancer. Advanced. The doctors had given him months, maybe less. The words had landed like stones in my stomach, heavy and cold.
I brushed the thought away fiercely, forcing the happiness back. Not today. Not right now.
I rode the rest of the way to the estate, pulled up in front of my house, and parked. That was when I noticed the car beside mine.
Cupid’s.
I frowned. Through the tinted window, I could see him, staring straight ahead into empty space, completely lost. His face was blank, eyes distant, as though the world had narrowed to something only he could see.
My heart lurched. I alighted quickly, pulse racing with sudden concern. I knocked on his window sharp, insistent, pulling him back to reality. He turned slowly, almost mechanically, to look at me.
“Cupid? Are you okay? What are you doing out here?”
The questions tumbled out all at once. He didn’t answer. He simply opened the door, stepped out gently, bypassed me without a word, and walked straight into the house.
My heart slammed against my rib cage hard, painful.
What had my father told him? What had he done?
I yanked my phone from my bag and dialed Alpha Herold’s number with shaking fingers. He picked up after a few rings
“What did you do to him?” I demanded before he could even speak, voice trembling with anger. “What did you tell Cupid?”
“Snow…”
“Listen to me,” I cut in, fury shivering through every word. “I am going to marry whoever I want whether you like it or not it’s Cupid or no one else. Unless you want to watch me hang myself, try taking him away from me.”
Silence stretched on the line. Not even a protest. Just a long, weary sigh. Then he disconnected.

I exhaled shakily, throat tight, and turned toward the house. The sound of running water greeted me the moment I stepped inside, steady, rhythmic, coming from the bathroom.
Quietly, heart still pounding, I walked toward it. I pushed the door open.
Cupid stood under the shower, completely naked, one hand braced against the tiled wall.
Water cascaded over his broad shoulders, down the tense lines of his back. He looked carved from stone, beautiful, broken, furiou in a way I couldn’t name.
Without a word, I dropped my bag to the floor. I stripped quickly, clothes pooling at my feet then stepped under the warm spray in
front of him.
He turned slowly. His arms came around my waist, tender at first, then tightening with something desperate. He kissed me, lips warm and urgent against mine, as water poured down over us both.
