Su Qinglan felt as though she were floating in a deep, endless ocean of ink. The screams of her husbands and the frantic cries of the cubs had faded into a heavy, suffocating silence.
[Host! Host, wake up! You must wake up!]
A familiar, high-pitched voice echoed through the darkness. Su Qinglan opened her eyes, but she wasn’t in her treehouse.
She was in a vast, dark void. Floating right in front of her was a glowing, translucent ball of light that glowed with a soft rhythm.
"Xuyu?" she whispered, her voice sounding small in the emptiness. "Is that you?"
The light bobbed up and down. [Yes, Host. It is me. This is my virtual consciousness manifesting in your mental space.]
Suddenly, the fog in Su Qinglan’s mind cleared, and the memory of the birth hit her like a physical blow.
Her face went pale, and she clutched her chest. "Xuyu! Where am I? Where are my babies? And... and the egg? Xuan Long... he..."
Her voice broke as she remembered the sight of the massive emerald snake swallowing the jade-green egg. The image was so vivid it made her heart ache with a fresh wave of agony.
Xuyu floated closer, his glow turning a gentle, soothing blue.
[Host, stay calm. You are currently in a deep coma caused by psychological shock. Everyone thinks you fainted from exhaustion, but your body is actually fine. It is your mind that has shut down.]
She began to tremble, her soul shaking with a grief so violent it threatened to tear her consciousness apart. "I saw it with my own eyes, Xuyu! He just... he just gulped it down!"
Xuyu floated closer, his glow turning a gentle, soothing blue. He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he projected a shimmering image in the air between them, a memory.
In the memory, Xuan Long looked into her eyes with his emerald slits and asked her in his raspy, quiet voice, "Do you trust me, Lan Lan?"
And the memory version of Su Qinglan had replied without a second of hesitation, her voice bold and clear: "Yes. I trust you."
The image faded, leaving Su Qinglan staring at the spot where it had been.
[Host, do you remember that?] Xuyu’s voice became incredibly gentle, like a comforting friend.
[You gave him your trust when he was a stranger. You gave him your heart when he was just a cold protector. Do you think a man who has lived for you, fought for you, and loved you would suddenly become a monster?]
"But he ate it..." Su Qinglan sobbed, a hiccup catching in her throat. "Xuyu, it was our baby! Why would he do that? It makes no sense!"
[Host, listen to me,] Xuyu urged, rubbing a small light particle against her arm to simulate a comforting touch.
[Don’t think too much right now. Just focus on your health. I am a system. I see things differently. I do not know exactly why he did it, but I know that Xuan Long would never do something to hurt you or your children.]
[Think, Host,] Xuyu continued softly.
Even in sleep, the tears did not stop at all, and he constantly wiped them away, only for more to appear.
So when she opened her eyes, he immediately noticed it.
He lunged forward, gathering her into a crushing hug. He buried his face in her neck, his tears streaming down onto her skin.
"For the sake of the Beast World... you finally woke up! I thought... I thought you were leaving us too."
Hu Yan’s heart had been clenching with every passing second she was asleep.
In the Beast World, medical facilities were primitive. He had seen females fall into unconsciousness after childbirth and never wake up again.
They would simply slip away into the Beast World above due to shock or hidden bleeding.
Even though Grandma Lin had repeatedly told him that Su Qinglan wasn’t bleeding and her vitals were stable, he hadn’t believed it. To him, her closed eyes felt like a death sentence.
He wanted to run outside and roar at the sky to thank the Beast God for not taking his mate away.
Su Qinglan felt his trembling body and slowly raised her hand to pat his back. She was smiling through her own tears.
"I am fine, Hu Yan. Don’t worry. Why are you crying like a cub?" she whispered, trying to console him.
