"You are finally here to save your mother! Tell them! Tell them your mother is a good person! Tell them I never harmed anyone!"
Xu Meiyan frowned, her face twisted in pain. "Mom! You’re hurting me! Let go!"
But Mu Lihua didn’t let go. She pulled Xu Meiyan into the middle of the circle, using her daughter like a shield. "Tell them! Tell them your mom is good! She could never do anything wrong!"
Xu Meiyan looked at the angry faces of the tribe, then at the cold, judging eyes of Su Qinglan and the blood-red eyes of the Tribe Leader.
She couldn’t do it. She couldn’t lie for her mother anymore. The evidence was too strong, and the fear for her own life was even stronger.
"Mom, you’re wrong!" Xu Meiyan screamed, tears finally bursting from her eyes.
"Everyone has seen how you bullied Su Qinglan since she was a child! It is the truth! How can I say you didn’t do it? And I never knew anything about your disgusting schemes! Why are you dragging me into this?"
Xu Meiyan tried to pull her hand away, desperate to draw a clear line between herself and her mother.
She was jealous and petty, yes, but she would never have been so cruel as to help kill someone or use black magic. She didn’t want to die for her mother’s sins.
Deep down, Xu Meiyan also felt a long-buried resentment. She remembered her own childhood.
While her life had been better than Su Qinglan’s, it was only because she knew how to please Mu Lihua. She had to be the perfect daughter just to get enough food to survive.
She wasn’t like Su Qinglan, who had a father like the Tribe Leader to spoil her.
Xu Meiyan’s own father had been a simple, average three-stripe fox warrior.
He was Mu Lihua’s first mate, the man she used just to get an entry into the tribe.
Xu Meiyan remembered how her father would hunt and bring back the best meat, only for Mu Lihua to eat almost all of it herself, leaving Xu Meiyan and her father to starve for days.
In the rainy seasons and the harsh winters, Xu Meiyan had nearly died of cold and hunger in her father’s arms, while Mu Lihua sat by the fire, eating the food the Tribe Leader gave to the poor family.
Mu Lihua didn’t care about her first mate or her own cub. She only cared about herself.
Xu Meiyan had always been jealous of Su Qinglan because when Su Qinglan turned her nose up at food, Xu Meiyan was literally dying for a single bite. She had always wanted a father like Su Mingxuan, who could hunt more prey for them.
"YOU UNGRATEFUL BRAT!" Mu Lihua shrieked. "I gave you everything! I fed you while she starved! I gave you the best furs! AND NOW YOU BETRAY ME? AHHH!"
"You didn’t give me anything!" Xu Meiyan screamed back, her voice cracking with years of hidden resentment.
"You took everything from my father! He died for you! I had to beg for scraps while you ate like a queen! You are a monster! AHHH!"
No wonder even her child had so much resentment and grew up with such character, even if a person like the original owner grew up with such a twisted personality.
Then how could Xu Meiyan grow up fine? It was just that she knew too well how to hide her schemes behind a fake smile. She had learned to survive, while the original owner perished in despair.
Su Mingxuan stepped forward, his shadow falling over both Mu Lihua and the bleeding Xu Meiyan.
"Are you finished?" he asked, his voice deathly quiet.
"Because now, it is my turn to ask the questions. And every time you lie, you will wish you had died in that mud."
He didn’t even care if she had hurt anyone or not, nor did he spare any glance toward Xu Meiyan. It was already better for her that he was not punishing her for bullying his daughter.
But she must forget the good times in his tribe as long as he was alive. And as for her mother, Mu Lihua, she would regret the day she was born.
"Warriors, drag her to the dungeon. I will personally deal with her."
He was not a weak minded person who would torture her in front of all these people. After all, she was still a female, even if she had committed a great crime. It was not good if she changed peoples mind with her tears.
It would be better if he dealt with her in private. He had only dragged her in front of everyone because he wanted the tribe to know that she was not his mate and that the place of his mate only belonged to his beloved Wang Mulan.
