Charlotte answered the call from Officer Woods, her face lighting up with joy when he told her they had a lead on Norene. "Where is she?"
"She's with Finnick Vinterberg in a small town in Southeast Asia. She's not in any mortal danger, and it doesn't seem like she's being held captive."
Officer Woods continued, "We tracked her down through Tricia's son. It appears Neely Vinterberg had already moved the boy to Southeast Asia before she went on the run."
"So Hans is with Neely?" A startling thought crossed Charlotte's mind. "Could... Finnick Vinterberg be Hans's biological father?" The possibility was more surprising than she'd expected.
But then she remembered something Neely had said. She hadn't intended to harm Norene. By using the Lennox family to achieve her goals but treating their daughter well, was she afraid Norene would harm her son in retaliation?
"We'll be reopening the Lennoxes' case," Officer Woods concluded. "As for Neely, the mastermind of the kidnapping plot, we'll notify the families of the other children. They've been waiting for this news for far too long."
…
In Larkspur, Southeast Asia, Norene was completely unaware of the events unfolding back home. She sat at the breakfast table with Hans, while a housekeeper was arranging food on his plate. Today's breakfast didn't seem to be to his liking, but he didn't dare refuse, chewing mechanically on the tasteless food.
Hans had been withdrawn and cautious since arriving in this strange place. Even after a few days, he remained quiet and watchful, always trying to read the expressions of those around him. Now, even when faced with food he disliked, he wouldn't dare say a word.
Norene hadn't planned on caring about him at all, but seeing a child forced into this unfamiliar environment, just like her, stirred a sense of shared misery. She had decided to keep Hans by her side.
Thankfully, the housekeeper didn't understand their language.
"Hey, kid," Norene said quietly. "If you don't want to eat, just say you're full. They won't force you."
Hans glanced at the housekeeper beside him. Seeing that she indeed couldn't understand them, he said in English, "I'm full."
The housekeeper looked at him in surprise. "But you've only just started."
"He's a child. A small appetite is understandable, isn't it?" Norene answered for him.
"Yes, miss," the housekeeper replied and withdrew.
