Charlotte didn't respond.
Emmett took a deep breath. "You too. Apologize."
This was directed at Mrs. Lowe.
"You want me to apologize to a junior?" she asked, incredulous.
"Apologize!"
Seeing the look on her husband's face, Mrs. Lowe didn't dare argue further. She reluctantly muttered an apology to Charlotte.
With both of them having apologized, sincerely or not, the gesture had to be accepted.
Charlotte offered a small smile. "For President Lowe's sake, let's consider the matter settled."
Emmett visibly relaxed. "Miss Rayburn is very gracious. I'm sure you're destined for great things, and I hope we'll have the chance to collaborate one day."
"Of course."
With that, Emmett led his wife and son away.
Sean stroked his chin. "I'm surprised Emmett was so sincere. Since when is he so humble?"
Charlotte came up behind him and began kneading his shoulders. "Dad, he's only apologizing because he respects you and Wesley, right?"
Tobias flinched at his father's furious expression but stubbornly retorted, "The Rayburn family is all she has behind her, right? They were the ones who wanted their daughter to marry me…"
"Yes, the Rayburns wanted Loretta to marry into our family, not Miss Charlotte! Are you so desperate that you'd go after her without doing your homework?" Emmett let out a sound that was half a bitter laugh, half a pained groan. "Caleb Rayburn has allied himself with Zachary Chase. They want a Rayburn daughter to marry Zachary's adopted son, Mr. Evander! Now that you've caused this mess, we can forget about ever getting any favors from Caleb. Do you understand?"
Mrs. Lowe clutched her stinging cheek, tears streaming down her face as she looked at her husband in disbelief. "It was all Kate's idea! I was just a pawn in her game."
If Kate hadn't painted such a rosy picture, and if her son hadn't been genuinely interested in the Rayburn girl, she never would have been so foolish. She had assumed that a long-lost daughter, just returned to the family, would be naive and easy to manipulate.
How could she have known it would end like this?
"From this day on, neither of you is to leave this house. And you are forbidden from ever contacting Kate again. If you disobey, you can both get out," Emmett said, yanking at his tie in frustration. He stormed into his study, leaving the mother and son standing in the silent living room, staring at each other in shock.
