Hearing this, Evander glanced at Charlotte and offered a faint smile. “The patriarch’s case has wide-ranging implications. It wouldn’t be appropriate to hold a celebration at a time like this. A delay is fine, uncle. We’ll do as you suggest.”
Sean looked at him. “I thought you might have some objections to postponing the engagement.”
“Not at all, uncle. I’m a patient man,” he replied.
Charlotte quickly ducked her head and took a sip of her soup. Only he would have the nerve to say something like that.
Wesley put down his utensils with a soft clatter. “I’m finished.”
He stood up and left the table. Charlotte watched him go upstairs, her face etched with worry.
“Don’t worry about your brother,” Sean said, noticing her expression. “It hasn’t been long since he went through that ordeal. He just needs time to heal.”
Evander placed a peeled shrimp in her bowl. “Your brother is a rational man. I’m confident he’ll bounce back soon. The best thing we can do right now isn’t to try and talk him through it, but to simply be there for him until he can find his own peace with it.”
Charlotte’s expression softened. He was right. With her brother’s personality, any attempt to comfort him would just make him pretend to be fine for her sake, while hiding how he truly felt.
“I guess that’s all we can do,” she said with a small smile.
Evander’s gaze shifted back to Sean. “Sir, you’ve been preoccupied with the patriarch’s legal case, and I imagine you haven’t had much energy for matters at home. I have some free time lately, so please don’t hesitate to ask if you need any help.”
“Since you’ve offered, I won’t be shy,” Sean said with a wave of his hand. “As it happens, I’ll be away for a few days. I’ll have to trouble you to look after my son and daughter.”
Evander smiled slightly. “It would be my honor.”
“But even though I’m letting you stay…” Sean cleared his throat. “You two had better behave yourselves.”
Charlotte choked, looking up with an embarrassed flush. “Dad, what are you thinking?”
“Ah, to be young again,” Sean sighed to himself, then began clearing the table before leaving as well.
Charlotte subconsciously touched her neck. Had her father noticed something? She was sure she hadn’t seen any marks when she was getting ready!
Evander saw her gesture and couldn’t help but chuckle. “We were going to see your family. I made sure not to leave any marks. Don’t worry.”
The housekeeper noticed his glance and smiled. “Mr. Howard made that for Miss Sterling. He made an extra portion for you as well.”
Wesley snorted. “Quite the charmer, isn’t he?”
Meanwhile, Evander pulled up to the main entrance of the research institute. As Charlotte got out of the car, he rolled down the window. “Let me know when you get off work.”
She turned back with a sudden smile. “You’re not actually taking this ‘caretaker’ role seriously, are you?”
First breakfast, and now chauffeuring her to work.
Evander smiled back. “What can I say? I enjoy taking care of you.”
Her laughter was his reward as she hurried inside.
Evander watched until she disappeared from view. Just as he was about to drive off, his phone rang. It was one of his bodyguards.
He answered, his expression unchanging. “Mr. Howard,” the man said, “Mrs. Jensen has given in. She’s agreed to your terms.”
