"The facts are right here! Your brother took advantage of my girl! If you don't believe it, tell him to produce a witness!"
The middle-aged woman snorted disdainfully. The moment the words left her mouth, Hiram remembered Vance. "Right! Vance can vouch for me!"
A nearby officer placed Hiram's phone on the table, gesturing for him to call his witness.
Hiram dialed Vance's number, but it rang endlessly with no answer. He tried again and again, but there was still no response.
Charlotte sensed something was off. Frowning, she pulled out her own phone and dialed Vance's number.
Moments later, the call connected.
But as soon as the person on the other end heard Hiram's voice in the background, they abruptly hung up.
She looked up and met Hiram's utterly bewildered eyes. He probably never imagined that the buddy he spent every day with would refuse to even pick up the phone when it mattered most.
Seeing this, the middle-aged woman grew even more arrogant. "You see that, officer?! His family is blatantly protecting a criminal! My daughter is only seventeen. A beautiful young girl ruined just like that, and they're talking about witnesses! They're just stalling for time!"
The police tried to calm her down. Although the two had been brought in straight from the hotel scene, the girl's medical report wasn't out yet. As the prime suspect, Hiram had to remain at the station until the results arrived.
Hiram stood there in a daze, looking as if his soul had left his body.
More than the false accusations, it was his friend's cold indifference that chilled him to the bone.
Charlotte stayed by Hiram's side while they waited for the report. The middle-aged woman continued glaring at them with blatant hostility, but Charlotte had no energy to entertain her.
She didn't even have the chance to check the messages on her phone.
About half an hour later, a female officer walked over holding a medical report.
Everyone's eyes locked onto the document.
"The results are in. The trace DNA found on the girl matches the suspect, Hiram Sterling."
Hiram was entirely dumbfounded. He stumbled backward. "How is that possible..."
Charlotte didn't believe it either.
