Chapter 58

Chapter 58

“You don’t have an option, love.” I stared at him in disgust as those words dropped from his lips.

“I don’t get why you’re making a big deal out of this. It’s not like we’re having sex or something.”

“I’m heading down to sleep,” I said, grabbing a pillow from the bed.

“There’s no way I’m letting you sleep on the couch,” he stated firmly, arms crossed over his chest.

“Then be a gentleman and sleep on the couch,” I shot back, anger rising hot in my throat.

“I’m being a gentleman by not letting you sleep on the couch,” he shouted, his hands flaring wildly. “Listen, Nia, the bed is big enough for both of us and you’re well…”

I was fuming now, chest tight. “Complete your fucking sentence.”

“Well, um…” He looked around, swinging his arms awkwardly. “Not so big? Travel sized maybe?”

“What the hell is your problem? You’re body shaming me,” I said, planting both hands on my hips. Heat burned up my neck

“I’m not. You have a delectable body. You’re just short,” he replied.

“Short???” I asked, voice rising.

“Aren’t you like 5ft 3 inches or something like that?” he said, chuckling.

“I’m 5’4, not 5’3,” I retorted.

“It’s almost the same thing, Nia.” I watched as he climbed onto the bed. “It’s a king-sized bed.”

“I’m average height, not short,” I said, still standing there with my arms crossed.

“What you are is delusional. Get your ass on the bed,” he said, lying down.

I grabbed two of the multiple throw pillows and placed them in the middle, trying to form a straight line down the center.

“What the hell are you doing?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

“I’m forming a line,” I said as I organized the pillows into a neat barrier.

I watched as he snickered, obviously amused, and sat upright. “A line? Really, Nia? How old are you? Five?”

I paid him no attention and continued arranging until I was satisfied. “That’s your half. This is mine. Don’t even attempt to touch the barrier.”

“Attempt to touch the barrier?” he asked.

“Yes,” I said, climbing into my side. “It’s big enough to contain us, no?”

“It was, until you squandered the space by placing these huge pillows,” he said bitterly.

“Good night.” I turned off the lights before he could say another word.

He stayed sitting up while I shimmed under the duvet, getting as comfortable as possible and shutting my eyes. It didn’t take long before exhaustion pulled me under.

I woke to faint streaks of sunlight slipping through the slight gap in the curtains. I tried to stretch, but my movements felt restricted. Something heavy held me in place.

I turned, confused, and caught a glimpse of Maddox’s sleeping face inches from mine. His arm wrapped firmly around my waist. He looked angelic in the most dangerous way, like a fallen angel. His long lashes fanned across his cheeks. I brushed a strand of his wavy dark hair away from his face without thinking.

I reached for my phone on the bedside table, but it was too far. I wiggled gently, trying to slip out of his grasp. I stiffened when he groaned low in his throat.

“Nia,” he said, voice gruff and thick with sleep. “You shouldn’t have done that.”

I could feel his raging erection pressed firmly against my ass. Shit. What had I done? I had unintentionally moved my hips. grinding against him.

I remained perfectly still. Has he always been this big?

“Let go, Maddox.”

“I really don’t want to,” he murmured, nuzzling deeper into my hair and inhaling slowly.

“Maddox?” I asked, impatience sharpening my tone.

I stood up the moment his arm loosened. My heart hammered against my ribs. What the hell was that about? Heat still lingered where his body had touched mine.

“He’s just horny. He’s just horny,” I repeated to myself like a mantra as I grabbed my phone and headed downstairs.

It was crazy how quickly he had fallen back asleep. Was he even fully awake? It felt like he had been talking in his sleep.

That was equally crazy.

It was Saturday, officially day two of our weekend getaway. I went back upstairs, threw a robe over my pajamas, washed my face, pulled my hair into a messy bun, and grabbed my headphones.

It was only 5 a.m. I didn’t expect to see many people out at this hour. I shoved my phone into the robe pocket and opened the door quietly.

I strolled along the seashore barefoot, Hozier playing loudly in my ears. Waves crashed against the shoreline in steady rhythm. I pulled the scrunchie from my hair, letting it fall loose and sway in the breeze.

There was no one else on the beach but me. I ran, toes digging into the cool sand with every step. I stopped suddenly, raising my hands high above my head. The wind whipped around me. For a moment, I felt completely free.

The irony hit hard.

I was trapped in my own life because of this contract. Yet here I was, feeling as free as a bird. It was sad how fleeting moments like this could be.

I would try my best to live in this feeling for as long as possible.

“Excuse me, ma’am?” I turned to see a tall blond man approaching.

I faced him. “Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, I mean, of course,” he said, taking a seat beside me on the sand. “I’ve been watching you from my window. You looked so good in your little bubble. It was really cute.”
