Chapter 79
Chapter 79
“Shall we begin?” The man I assume to be Bella’s attorney said as I took a seat.
I watched as the others, including Mr. Hale, nodded in agreement.

“I’ll just get to the point. We’re here on the grounds of assault, because of the unfortunate incident that took place a couple of days ago. It was an accident. Miss Laurent didn’t have the intention to push Dr. Page. We believe a settlement will suffice.”
I watched as he finished speaking. An accident really?
“We’re offering $20,000 in compensation. We want no media coverage or lawsuits. No criminal complaint whatsoever and definitely no damages to Miss Laurent’s reputation.”
Bella smirked as her attorney finished speaking.
Bastards.
They expect money to solve everything?
She expects me to take peanuts for attempted murder? If she wants to pay, she will pay, but not the fragments she’s offering Bella doesn’t see me as anything more than a church rat.
Maddox placed his hand on my thigh, drawing letters.
“BREATHE”
I took a deep breath in and out, and he nodded gently.
“I believe we’re done here,” Bella said sassily as she pulled out her chequebook. “I’ll be writing the cheque in your favour,
Nia.”
Maddox pressed a tiny button next to him, and a screen rolled out, pausing Bella in her tracks.
The video of Bella pushing me into the pool kept playing on loop. It was so obvious because she used both hands.
“What is this?” Her voice shook. “I thought you took care of this. You guaranteed me that you destroyed the CCTV footage.”
“I have that on record, Isabella Laurent,” Mr. Hale spoke finally, leaning forward. “Now listen carefully. We have more than enough charges to make you a criminal. We’re only being lenient because of Daddy dearest.”
I watched as her bottom lip quivered. She really couldn’t believe it.
“These are our terms. You’ll be paying $50,000 compensation as well as the medical bills and damages to her personal property. This is a copy of a restraining order. You’re not permitted to be in events where Dr. Page is to attend. You’re not also to speak of this arrangement to anyone. The moment you make a mistake, you’ll be arrested.”
Maddox’s attorney said. It was my turn to smirk.
“Why?” she asked.
“You forgot to add aiding and abetting to the list,” Maddox said. “Where is he?”
“Trey isn’t a criminal. He’s misunderstood,” she said stubbornly.
“Answer me.” Maddox said firmly.
“I don’t know. He only shows up when he needs something,” she mumbled.

I watched as she signed alongside her manager, who hasn’t said a word, and her attorney. She wrote the cheque also and handed it to the lawyer, then stood up and stormed off, her minions in tow.
“We’re very sorry, Dr. Page,” Mr. Hale said. “It was never our intention to put you in such a complicated situation.”
I watched as his eyes wandered to Maddox, not so discreetly.
“It’s alright,” I said simply.
“We’ll have the cheque processed and the money wired to your account,” he said.
That’s right. It was my money now? I’m now 50k richer.
“Thank you very much,” I replied, rising to my feet.
“Take two more days to rest. We need you in the best shape possible. The playoffs aren’t so far anymore. Resume on Thursday,” he said, walking off, the Coach in tow.
“Thank you,” I said to the attorney.
“Anytime, Dr. Page,” he said before shaking Maddox’s hand and walking off, leaving me alone with Maddox in the conference hall.
“It’s finally over,” I said, smiling broadly.
“You seem happy, especially for someone who wasn’t interested,” he smiled also.
I’m trying so hard to play it cool, but that is quite a sum of money. I was never really interested in the case, but I’m glad now that I went through with it, despite that.
The best part is that I no longer have to bother about running into her at events, which is simply great. Nothing terrifies me at an event more than the probability of running into Bella, and now it’s all over.
“I’m just glad it’s all over. Mom was so pissed that I had no interest in pressing charges,” I sighed and leaned on the edge of the table.
“And rightfully so,” Maddox replied as he stood facing me. “This is your life we’re talking about. I’m probably not the best person to say this to you.”
“It’s not your fault,” I said calmly, locking eyes with him.
“It is,” he said, interlacing our fingers.
I watched as his chest rose and fell gently. The hall was becoming too small.
“It’s really not,” I said firmly this time. “She made the decision to push me on her own. You weren’t even there. I don’t see why you should take blame for that.”
“Nia,” he whispered softly.
I looked up instinctively as he held my chin, stroking it gently. His eyes were warm, so warm. It almost didn’t feel like Maddox for a second.
I forgot how to breathe as he leaned in. My eyelids fluttered closed as he kissed the bridge of my nose, chuckling lightly.
“Let’s go,” I said, grabbing my purse, blushing profusely.
“Are you embarrassed, Emily?” he purred.

“Don’t call me that.” His laughter rang loudly as we wandered into the hallway.
“Do you want to get something from your office?” he asked.
“Nah, not really,” I replied.

I stopped at the office before I came for the meeting. They were all so happy to see me. I missed all of them so much. especially Edna, who almost cried. She was really worried when she saw the news. Vera also.
I almost can’t wait to resume. I can’t believe that I miss work. I’ve done a couple of jobs, from menial jobs when I was in college to working at Mom’s clinic and then a hospital. It’s part of the reason I don’t like hospitals.
Working in a hospital exposes you to a lot of risks, and you almost become desensitized to death and pain, and I didn’t really like that.

We walked into the parking lot side by side, Leo in tow.
“What do you plan to do for the rest of today?” Maddox asked.
“Nothing really,” I replied. “I just want to rest.”
“You really need it,” Maddox said as we got to the car. “Do you mind if we go somewhere?”
I paused and turned to stare at him. “Where?”
“There’s only one way to find out,” he replied, smiling.
I narrowed my eyes.
“That sounds suspicious.”
“It should.”
I rolled my eyes. “I just survived attempted murder. The least you can do is tell me where you’re kidnapping me.”
“It’s not kidnapping if you willingly get in the car.”
“That’s exactly what a kidnapper would say.”
He laughed.
Actually laughed.
Not the small smiles he’d been giving me these past few days. A real laugh.
For a moment, everything felt normal.
Leo opened the car door.
I was about to get in when I noticed Maddox’s expression change.
It happened so quickly I almost missed it.
