Chapter 86
Chapter 86

My two-day break went by in a blur and before I knew it I was preparing to go to work. Mom left for the clinic quite early, so I had to prepare Zara for school and pack her lunch.
I drove with Leo in tow. It was the new normal, I guess. I can’t just have my car parked and be driven around. Or maybe he’ll drive me in my car tomorrow.
I parked in my delegated spot at the Rogers Arena. I took a deep breath in and out. It had been a week and a half approximately since I last came to work.
I was feeling a bit nervous. I had fallen out of my routine. I wore forest green tailored pants today, a black sleeveless bodysuit, and a black bomber jacket draped over my shoulders. I paired my outfit with black slingbacks and my Chanel
purse.
“Dr. Page,” Jamie greeted with a smile. “It’s great to have you back.”
“Thank you very much,” I replied, returning her smile as I walked to my office.
“Morning, Doc.” Edna pulled me into a hug as I entered the physio suite. “I missed you so much.”
“I missed you more,” I replied, chuckling.
“Who is that?” I watched as her eyeballs widened.
I didn’t need to turn to know who she was referring to. “Leo.”
I replied simply and walked into my office.
“Who’s Leo?” Edna asked, accompanying me.
“My bodyguard,” I replied.
“He looks very scary,” she shuddered gently.
“He practically saved my life,” I said. The memory flooded my head.
“He’s the one that got you out?” she replied. “Now I think I need to give him a hug.”
“For what?” I asked, laughing.
“For saving you for us,” she answered, turning to take her leave.
“Well, good luck with that,” I replied, shaking my head.
I just realized that I know nothing about him. I didn’t have the slightest clue who Leo was. It was almost as if he had no personality.
I know he’s a good person. It takes someone with a good heart to dive into a twelve-foot pool, completely dressed, without hesitation to save a stranger.
I made a mental note to ask him some questions later, if he didn’t mind. He seemed like a very private person and I wouldn’t want to intrude.
I pushed my glasses up the bridge of my nose and began my work for today. Edna is such an angel. She made sure that my work would be easier for me when I resumed.
Such a sweetheart.

I quickly went through the things that needed my attention. I really missed this level of productivity. I can’t believe I’m saying I missed work, but I really did.
“Delivery for Dr. Page,” Leo rapped his knuckles on my door as he opened it.
“For me?” I raised my head to see the most beautiful bouquet of flowers. “Oh my goodness.”
They were tulips. I took the bouquet from his hand, wondering who they were from.
“Who delivered it?” I asked, confused.
“A delivery man,” Leo replied.
I fished around the flowers for a card.
“I’m sorry Nia, talk to me please.”
I read the card three times before setting it down.
The handwriting was messy. Not because he didn’t care..
Because he’d written it in a hurry.
I felt my mood soured. I took a deep exhale and decided to continue with the rest of my work.
“You can leave, Leo. Thank you very much,” I said as he left.
I wasn’t ready to talk to Maddox yet. I had a couple of things to do.
I stayed back a bit at work. I still had a lot of things to do. I knew I wasn’t going to finish everything today, but I needed to complete my proposed tasks for the day.
I heard a slight knock on the door.
“Come in.”
I stared at the door as Maddox walked in, looking very solemn.
He looked tired.
Not physically tired. Emotionally tired.
His hair was messy, like he’d been running his hands through it all day. There were dark circles beneath his eyes, and for the first time since I’d met him again, he looked uncertain.
It unsettled me more than I wanted to admit.
“Hi, Nia,” he said as he shut the door.
I took a shaky breath in, still not sure of what I wanted to do now.
Do I just leave?
“I’m sorry for barging in on you like this,” he shoved his arms into his pockets.
“It’s alright.” I managed to say normally.
“I really need us to talk.” he scratched his head awkwardly.

Chapter 86
“I’m kind of busy at the moment,” I replied. “Does it have to be now?”
“When you’re ready,” he took a seat.
I stared at him in shock. “You’re waiting?”
“You expected me to leave?” he asked.
“Um, yes!” I replied.
“It’s alright then. I’ll leave,” he rose to his feet. “I’ll be back whenever you’re ready.”
And somehow, that hurt more than if he’d argued with me.
The scent of his perfume still lingered as he left. Should I have talked to him today?
I didn’t really have much to say to him if I was being honest. Sitting here would just waste my time and his.
There’s no way I’ll be able to get any work done with him here. I was already feeling overwhelmed. I stared at the tulips. I think I’m done for the day.
I arranged my stuff into my purse and grabbed the oversized bouquet.
“Are you ready?” I asked Leo as I handed him the bouquet.
“Of course, ma’am,” he replied.
“Let’s go then.”
We walked to our cars and I immediately regretted driving today.
I was already feeling exhausted, so I needed to go home and take a nap.
Leo placed the flowers in the back seat of my car and shut the door. I drove all the way home in silence. I needed to think as clearly as possible.
Music would only stress me out at this point. I really don’t know what to do about Maddox at this point. He was almost like a completely different person.
So needy and it was so shocking. Gone was the aloof coldness. I didn’t know what to do. He needed to go back to his usual
self.
Liar.
The voice came from somewhere deep inside me.
