Chapter 89
Chapter 89
I walked out of the locker room after freshening up. Father had called earlier and demanded to see me. I wondered what
that was about.
We had not really spoken since he warned me against taking legal action against Bella. He arranged for the meeting to be held at the house in his study. I did not even bother to call Beck to ask if he was going. I just headed there directly.
I drove into the Kane residence and tossed my keys to the valet. I spotted Beck’s car already parked and sighed internally.” There was no point in calling him at the end of the day.
I rang the bell and the door opened. I smiled broadly, expecting to see Adam.
“Who the fuck are you?” I asked. My smile disappeared in an instant.
“I….. am….”
I watched with visible disgust as he stuttered.
“He’s the stand-in butler,” Beck interjected.
“What happened to Adam?” I asked, still scrutinizing the new guy.
“He’s on leave,” Beck replied. “And step away from the staff. You’re traumatizing him.”
I shot him a final warning look before I walked away. “I thought y’all fired Adam.”
“You’re acting like a toddler with strong attachment issues,” Beck scoffed.
“As I should,” I retorted. “He was the one that raised me. He was better than all the fancy sitters and etiquette coaches. All the assholes that Father hired who didn’t give a shit about us.”
I walked out on him before he could reply. I was saying the truth and he knew it.
“Enter,” I heard Father reply as I knocked on the door of his study.
“Take a seat,” he said coolly, sipping his vodka as usual.
Beck arrived shortly and took the seat right beside me.
“Where’s Adam?” I asked. Father raised his eyebrow, obviously shocked.
I had always been completely disinterested in the day-to-day running of this house, but I could not ignore not seeing Adam. He was the reason I even still came to this house. They could not let him go without telling me.
“He’s on sick leave,” Father replied.
“The new butler isn’t to your liking?” he asked.
“Only Adam is,” I stated simply.
“I had a conversation with Mr. Laurent about the merger and it will still proceed as planned,” Father said, getting down to business immediately.
“Your point exactly?” I asked.
“Your engagement to Isabella is still valid. You will get married to her,” he replied.

I balled my fingers into a fist. “Even after everything she has done? She has practically been banned from all social gatherings and lost all her brand sponsorships. She’s getting cancelled online and everywhere.”
“I’m very much aware. You’re exactly what she needs to rebuild her image,” he said, lighting his cigar
“You want me to get cancelled alongside her,” I replied, completely appalled.
“It’s just social media. It’s nothing serious. I don’t see any reason why it should be a big deal,” he shrugged.
“She tried to kill Nia, Father.”
He took a slow sip of his drink.
“But she didn’t die.”
For a second, I genuinely thought I had misheard him.
“What?”
He set the glass down with deliberate care.
“She made a mistake. A very expensive mistake, but a mistake nonetheless.”
I stared at him.
Nia had almost drowned.
I could still remember diving into that pool. The panic. The blood pounding in my ears. The terrifying second when I thought I was too late.
And he was calling it a mistake.
I turned to face Beck and said quietly, “You might as well say Bella should have killed her.”
“You hold your tongue, young man,” he spat angrily. “It seems like associating with the underdogs has begun to affect your sense of reasoning. You will marry Isabella and that’s final.”
I rose to my feet immediately and walked out. I was not in the mood to get into an altercation with him.
He talked about Nia’s traumatic experience like it was nothing.
Bella casually tried to unalive someone and he wanted me to get married to such an individual. She did not even feel remorse at all. Even after everything.
She could kill me then. She was more than capable of committing a gruesome offense. Nia was only safe if I kept her away from Bella.
I pulled out my phone before I even reached the car.
Increasing Dr. Page’s security detail, I texted my head of security,
Then I hesitated before sending another message.
I want to know where Isabella Laurent is at all times. If she gets within fifty feet of Nia, I want a call immediately.
I hit send.
Maybe it was excessive.

Chapter 89
I didn’t care, because she did not even understand the concept of personal space.
I got into my car and drove off.
I ignored the three missed calls from Beck.
The city lights blurred past the windshield. I drove on autopilot, barely remembering half the turns I took before pulling into the underground parking garage of my building.
I sat in the car for a full minute after turning off the engine.
Bella didn’t die.
The words replayed in my head.
Like Nia’s life had been reduced to a bad business decision.
I gripped the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white.
Then I got out of the car.
I had been staying at the apartment more and more lately. I told myself it was because it was closer to the arena.
That was a lie.
The truth was, I couldn’t stand being at the condo anymore.
I couldn’t stand walking into the kitchen and remembering her standing there in my shirt, drinking coffee.
I couldn’t stand seeing her favorite mug still sitting in the cabinet.
I couldn’t stand wondering whether she’d spent the day laughing with Liam.
Or Leo.
Or anyone who wasn’t me.
The worst part was that I had no right to feel any of it.
Nia had built an entire life without me.
A daughter.
A career.
A home.
And somehow, I was jealous of every single person who had been allowed to be part of it.
I unlocked the penthouse and walked inside.
The silence hit me immediately.
I tossed my keys onto the counter and stared at the hallway leading to her room.
I hadn’t slept in my own bed in four days.
I walked into her bedroom.
Chapter 89
The bed was still made.
Her perfume still lingered faintly in the air.
I sat down on the edge of the mattress and rubbed a hand over my face.
