When Tegan grabbed food for Finley, she brought a sandwich for Miriam too.
Miriam almost cried from gratitude. "Tegan, you're an absolute angel. You're a million times better than that cold-hearted Leslie."
"How is Uriah so blind? Why can't he see..."
"Shh," Tegan shushed her.
Before Miriam could finish, Tegan gestured for her to keep her voice down.
Miriam looked confused.
"Uriah is in the third room down the hall!" Tegan whispered.
If his door was open, he probably would have heard every word Miriam just said!
Or if she had just been a little louder.
Miriam gasped.
You've got to be kidding me. What are the odds?
Sure, talking behind people's backs wasn't great, but when it came to Uriah, she really didn't care.
A second later, Miriam scoffed. "Let him hear. If he hears me, I'll just curse him out to his face."
She pouted, looking incredibly wronged.
Like she said, she had already quit. She couldn't actually do anything to Uriah, but couldn't she at least vent?
*Buzz, buzz.* Tegan's phone rang again. It was Finley.
Tegan answered. "Prof. Yoder."
"I'm starving."
Tegan glanced at the takeout bag in her hand. "Be right there."
Hanging up, Tegan looked at Miriam. "Will you be alright by yourself?"
"I'll be fine. It's just a fever. Nothing else hurts."
Even though she had collapsed at the airport and been carried in, she didn't feel any physical pain.
Just the lingering weakness from her high temperature.
Tegan nodded. "Alright, I'm heading out."
"Tegan," Miriam called out.
"Yeah?"
"Can you come see me later?"
Tegan paused.
"I don't know anyone else here," Miriam added.
"He was my childhood sweetheart. My first love."
Harper fell silent.
Ugh...
That made the betrayal sting deeper than a normal affair.
If Miriam didn't have that kind of history with Gideon, a girl with her fiery personality would never shed a tear.
Thinking of all their years together—a bond forged from childhood—gave Harper a headache. She worried Miriam wouldn't be able to move on.
Harper sighed. "Alright, alright. Your wedding is completely ruined now. I bet Gideon's mother had a hand in this."
Miriam went completely silent.
Hearing about Gideon's mother froze her.
The woman had always despised her. "So... she arranged the woman last night?"
"More than likely. Do you know who she is?"
In just a short time, Harper had already dug up the whole story.
"Who?" Miriam asked.
"Uriah's cousin, Quintessa Horner."
