Dark Queen Of Apocalypse (by Morgan Hale) novel Chapter 307

Chapter 307

Seeing how wellbehaved and sensible Ada was, Jessica couldn’t help but shed a tear. She gritted her teeth and arter shee mind to buy the little dress.

She scrubbed her dirty hands against her clothes and then gingerly picked up the dress,

She thought, The fabric is so soft. Ada will definitely feel comfortable in it. If only I could bathe her.

Just then, a middleaged woman came over, holding a needle and thread, and flashed jessica a big smile. Hey there, you like that little dress, huh?

Jessica nodded, feeling confused. She glanced at the woman’s clean, tidy clothes, then at her own shabby outfit, and couldn’t help but feel a bit embarrassed.

But the woman didn’t look down on her at all. In fact, she seemed almost welcoming.

I made the dress you’re holding. If you’re interested, there’s a fabric section over there. You can get silk like this for right points, and if you pay me five points for sewing, I’ll make you one just like it,the woman offered.

That way, she could get the little dress for a total of thirteen points. And the woman would earn a few points on the side.

Still, Jessica found it hard to believe and worried this might be a scam.

Don’t worry. The rules in the base are strict. No one dares to cheat or pick fights here, the woman added.

Jessica nodded firmly. Okay. She spent eight points on some fabric, gave it to the woman, and wrote down her address.

The houses in the base were all built together or along the walls, and each one had its own address. It was easy to find where someone lived.

The woman grinned from ear to ear. Alright! I’ll be busy tonight, but I’ll finish it at home tomorrow and drop it off for you in the evening. As she was leaving, she added, Oh, and there’ll be some fabric left.

I’ll make some extra stuff for your girl, like underwear and little tops, just to thank you for coming to me.

The only steady way to earn points in the base was by farming. That usually brought in about a hundred points a day.

If people wanted more points, they had to trade stuff or offer their services to others at the base.

The electronic point cards worked like mobile payments. They simply put two cards together, enter the amount, and the points would instantly transfer to the other card.

Or, they could use cores for trading.

Jessica and Ada picked up a few more essentials at the supermarket with their points and then headed home hand in hand.

The houses here were all uniform. 120squareyard brickandtile homes with two bedrooms and a living room, left unfinished inside.

Each house had a 240squareyard yard outside, perfect for growing their own fruits and vegetables.

Seeds could be bought at the supermarket.

As soon as they stepped inside, all they could see was a bed, an AC, and some curtains.

like the ones you’d find in the last century.

Thankfully, there was a power outlet nearby, so they could cook with electricity if they wanted.

Even though the electric bill wasn’t too high, one point for each kilowatthour, most folks were still stingy with it. After all still added up.

It was midsummer, and even at night, the heat was brutal. It felt like they could melt right onto the floor.

Jessica carefully poured some water into a basin and gently wiped Ada’s face with a little washcloth

She switched on the AC, and the room cooled down fast. Jessica felt like she could finally catch her breath.

She pulled a small blanket out of her backpack and tucked it around Ada. Ada, be a good girl Mommy’s heading out to see if I can find some work. You stay here and try to get some rest, alright?

Ada grabbed her hand. Mommy, can I come with you? I’m worried about you.

Jessica gently stroked Ada’s forehead. You heard them earlier. It’s safe here at the base. Nobody’s going to hurt anyone. T be fine. If you come along, I’ll have to look after you, and it’ll be tough for me to find a job.

Ada reluctantly let go of her hand, her eyes brimming with tears. Okay, but be careful, Mommy.

After all the chaos and wandering, Ada was so exhausted that her eyelids kept drooping. She fell asleep almost instantly

Jessica finally dragged herself out, feeling completely wiped out.

Compared to most survivors, she was pretty lucky. The base gave out points based on headcount, so she and Ada had 200 points to their name.

Just picking up some pots, bowls, and dishes today had already burned through more than half of their points. She really needed to come up with a plan.

As soon as Jessica stepped outside, she ran into some of her fellow survivors who had come along with her.

There were over thirty people in their group, including seven or eight kids, all packed into neighboring houses.

The kids with parents could sleep soundly at home, but a few of the teenagers were orphans. They had to rely on their own hands to earn points, hardly having any time to sleep.

Everyone stuck together as they walked. Before long, they stepped into the big central building of the base.

Now and then, people came and went, exchanging things or information.

The place was massive, and the decor was super fancy, kind of like the lounge at an international airport.

One of the staff members was taking notes, looking totally focused.

When she saw the ragged refugees coming in, she gave them a professional smile, no hint of disdain in her eyes, and looked genuinely welcoming.

The real problem was that Blaze Haven was just enormous, spanning thousands of acres. But with so few workers around, everyone was dead tired from all the work.

Every day, tons of tasks were posted, but nobody was willing to take them on.
