I give her a worried glance. The more Michael knows, the worse it is for all of us.
"Since we're on the topic," Michael starts. See what I mean.
"Don't even," I warn him. "We're gonna be late to school."
He starts driving, but he doesn't shut up. "I've got two questions and then I'm done."
"No," I say.
"Were you guys always werewolves?" He risks looking back at them in the rearview mirror for a second.
I'm about to start telling him off, but he covers my mouth.
I smack his hand away. "They can't answer that."
Krys starts talking. "Well, maybe we can-"
I glare at her. "You won't answer that, because there's a crazy counsel that might kill him if he know too much."
"Like the Volturi in Twilight?" Michael nearly loses control of the wheel.
We all brace ourselves.
He doesn't even seem to notice, lost in thought. "Oh no, I'll have to become a werewolf now." His eyes widen beyond what should be humanely possibly. His head snaps in my direction. He stares at me, mouth open, not even watching the road. "They turned you already, didn't they?"
Brittany smacks her forehead. "No, we didn't."
"You were a werewolf this whole time?" he screams.
"No," Brittany and I scream.
Krys laughs hysterically. "I love your brother. It's not fair. Can I have ten?"
"Finally, someone appreciates me." Michael smirks at her. "Unfortunately I'm out of stock."
I nearly gag.
Brittany glares at him, and at Krys for laughing harder. "I'm gonna tell you this because from my experience, not telling someone who wants to know something is far more dangerous. They start poking around, so listen carefully. People can't be turned, and if you were a werewolf, you'd already know."
"Really?" I ask this time. "People being turned is a myth?" It's the silver thing all over again.
Krys shakes her head. "Well technically humans can be turned."
"It's a death sentence." Brittany gives me a hard look. "That image in your head of a man becoming a hairy beast, physically caught between wolf and man, howling at the moon, shifting uncontrollably every month? That's what happens when werewolves turn humans. And a few years later, they die. They always die."
I gulp. Oh. I picture Onai. He was definitely able to control his shifts, and he became a full wolf, so I guess he wasn't turned. But then what is he? Why does the town treat him the way it does?
Michael doesn't say anything else.
"Anymore questions?" Brittany asks, but it's more of a rhetorical question.
Of course Michael answers though. "One more."
The car becomes quiet as we hit a red light. In stillness and in silence, we wait for him to say something. When he finally does, I'm not prepared.
"Mm, mm, mm," Krys tsks with too much amusement in her voice. "Just pullin' em."
"No, I'm really not. Really." I put my hands up in defense.
Krys starts singing Maneater.
Brittany stares at me wide eyed, shaking her head. "This is gonna get so bad..." She rubs her forehead. "So bad, so fast..."
I give her a pleading look. Please don't tell.
She sighs. "I'm not in the business of starting shit that doesn't need to be started, but you need to talk to them. Make things clear."
"Exactly." Michael points towards her with his eyes on the road like, 'Listen to this girl.'
She points back at Michael like, 'That's right.' She gives me a firm look. "You need to talk to Carson, today, before he gets hurt. He's high maintenance, over emotional, and territorial. If you can't handle that, that's okay, but say so now or forever hold your peace."
Michael furrows his brow. "Actually that sounds really toxic and abusive."
Krys shakes her head. "I think it's endearing."
"Endearing?" Michael scoffs.
Brittany nods, not even entertaining his sarcasm. "It's just typical werewolf behavior. It's how we show our care, especially when we feel threatened romantically."
"I don't give a damn what you are, that's not okay. It's not an excuse," Michael says firmly. He tightens his grip on the wheel. "Maybe you should steer clear of that, Mia. Go back to Aiden or Axel or whoever."
