I give them all a 'don't you upset him more than he already is' glare. We're already arguing. I don't need them to make it worse. "Come on," I say cheerfully. "Let's go see how to fix a window."
I take Charlie and his bag of legos before he can complain. Axel follows. I call Megan to come too.
"Wait." Michael stops us. "What window? And what about the rest of these people?" He points at Ethel, Onai, and Luca. "I'm not entertaining stragglers."
"These people are our guests," Megan gives Ethel a sincere look. It reads, 'I've got you baby.'
He doesn't notice, but Michael does. He looks at me, then points at her. He mouths, 'Does she like him?'
I nod.
He all but snatches her away. "Not in your life, kid."
"No," she cries out. "Watch the hair at least."
"Whatever guests you're not watching need to leave, Mia." Michael crosses his arms. "I'm in charge."
"Of what?" I ask.
Megan chuckles, earning a glare from Michael.
"Out. Now," Michael orders.
Ethel looks heartbroken. "But... I didn't finish my kool-aid..."
"Wait, there's kool-aid?" Michael asks.
I give him a look. "Are you serious?"
He looks around the room, noticing Megan's cup on the table. "Is that yours, Meg?" He reaches for it.
Everybody, and I mean everybody (but Luca), screams, "Don't drink it!"
Michael puts it down. "Alright, alright. But why?"
Instead of answering him, Onai mutters, "Just tell me what you need, Michael, so we can leave already."
"What do you mean what do I need?" Michael asks.
Onai raises an eyebrow, then he glares at me. "What does he mean what do I mean what does he need, Mia?" He asks me that long, overly-complicated question with the straightest face ever.
I laugh nervously. "Remember, Michael?" I give him a look. " You wanted to see the... shift."
"Oh," Michael says. "That? Yeah." He gestures for Onai to take center stage. "Go ahead. I'm waiting."
"Why would I do that?" Onai asks.
Axel nods, equally confused.
"No time to explain," I say. "Feel free to use the backyard."
Onai heads for the front door with his brother. "Come on, Luca. We're leaving."
I put Charlie down for a second to chase him. "Listen," I whisper.
Onai keeps walking.
I tell Luca he can have the fruit punch from the fridge. He's gone in seconds.
Michael, on the other hand, doesn't spare a glance. "Are you gonna do it then?" he asks Onai lazily, keeping his eyes on his book.
"Why should I?" Onai asks.
"I don't know. Why should you?" Michael shrugs.
Onai sighs, loudly. "Why do you want me to, genius?"
In the midst of this disaster, Axel walks up beside me, leaning towards my ear. "So I'm guessing you know about Onai?" he asks.
I nod, staring at the two bicker. "I guess you do too then."
He nods, watching them. Then he gestures towards Michael. "Does he... feel the same way?"
I shrug. "I don't know. Who's to say with that one."
"I guess your boyfriend just wouldn't be cool with that, right?" Michael blurts out.
That's my cue to leave. I signal for Megan to come on already, quickly.
She looks up from her spot by Luca, having been lecturing him on the importance of etiquette and manners. "What?" she asks.
Onai cocks his head back. "My... boyfriend?" He puts two and two together. His head snaps in my direction.
I grab Megan, Axel, and Charlie. "Time to go fix the window."
"But Mom says no boys allowed upstairs-" Megan starts.
