Ditched Cheating Alpha, I Led My Daughter to Life's Peak novel Chapter 241

Someone like that probably isn't around Carson right now, so that's good.

I move through the halls as quietly as possible. I'm nowhere near my locker, so all I can hope is that I'm not being followed. I check over my shoulders a million times, but sure enough, I'm alone. I relax a bit. Even if there is someone, I should try not to look suspicious.

Okay, it's time to think. The last time I saw this guy, he was in the gym, so that's where I go. I push through the double doors, and I'm greeted by swarms of miserable people doing laps. They look exhausted, all but falling over themselves. I can't blame them.

I move through them, closer to the railing that overlooks the entire room. Jumping guy. Jumping guy. Jumping guy. Jumping guy...

Nothing. And you know what? It's been so long since I've seen him, I wonder if I could even recognize him in the crowd anymore.

He had short hair to my knowledge, but that's a trend among labor and defense people. Dark skin. Tall figure. But that's nothing special. What color were his eyes again? I can't remember, and that seems to be the best way to identify people around here. Geez. What am I gonna do?

Carson's gonna get suspicious if I take too long. I need to act fast, but how? What's an efficient way to find someone without knowing their name or being able to ask around for them?

I get a few strange looks from people rushing past me, but I stand up straight. I don't want them to think I need help, or worse, that I'm not where I'm supposed to be.

As I move around, continuing my search, I try to stay out of the way as much as possible. No one can really afford to stop and stare at me anyway, so it works for the most part.

It feels weird to be completely in stealth mode. I should've brought my shades to seal the experience. Wait, do I have them in my bag? Is it too late to put them on?

"Mia?" Krys' voice sounds beside me.

I. Jump. Out. Of. My. Skin. Covering my mouth so that I don't scream, I stare at her wide-eyed. "Krys." I try to steady my heart. "What..." I clear my throat. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm training the newest recruits," she says.

"Without Bri?" I ask.

She nods. "She had to do something across town, so I've taken over." Before I can say anything else, she laughs out of nowhere, nodding towards the recruits. "God. They look terrible."

The guards drag themselves along, knocking into each other weakly. They clearly look gassed. One guy's even using the railing to drag himself along. It's not helping that much.

"Brings me back." She wipes a tear from her eyes. She's smiling, but something about her eyes doesn't seem like she should be smiling at all. "Don't worry. They'll get better soon."

A few people collapse. She gasps, covering her mouth. The hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. "Are they okay?"

She doesn't answer, rushing to their side. "I need three over here."

Someone rushes over with three body bags. My eyes fly open. It freaks the people on the floor out too. They hold onto each other.

"You guys are alive?" she asks sounding genuinely confused.

They nod.

She furrows her brow. "Then why are you on the floor?" she asks innocently.

"Seriously, Krys." I hold her arm. "They really can't know."

"Got it." She seals her lips and throws away the key.

I smile.

She smiles back. "So Onai?"

I shake my head again. "It can't be him or Ethel."

"Your brother?" she offers.

I wave my hand. "Absolutely not. It's... a romantic thing."

"Oh." She wiggles her eyebrows. "Not enough space in the metaphorical bed. I've got you." She elbows me.

"It's not that," I say.

She looks convinced. "Well, maybe..." She stares into space. "I guess there's... I mean you could...." She furrows her brow. "Actually, I don't think you know any other guys. Maybe the school nurse?"

I chuckle under my breath. "I can't talk to the school nurse about this." That's Suzie's mom.
