Ditched Cheating Alpha, I Led My Daughter to Life's Peak novel Chapter 278

Aiden waits until I'm in the house to drive away. I'm not sure, but I think I see something move in the backseat when he pulls off. I feel like a total screw up, and I don't even know why. It had to come out at some point right? It's not cheating. We're all together. It's called polygamy. It's a thing.

But my mom doesn't know we're like that. I bury my face in my hands.

"That's right," she tells me. "You should feel scummy, you scummy girlfriend."

"Mom," I cry out. This just isn't what I need right now.

She stops for a moment, giving me a sad look. "Not now?"

I nod.

She sighs. "Go to bed then."

"Thanks, mom."

"Hm." She follows me up the steps. "You better be glad your father already fell asleep. Cursing Carson's name no less." She shakes her head. "The poor boy. It's just not right. We're waking up bright and early to talk about this-"

"Mom," I whisper-scream. I can't take it anymore. I get it. I've failed her for all eternity. Just let me brush my teeth.

Michael's out cold. My so-called beta and defender. Typical. I go through my usual routine-brushing my teeth, washing my face, taking a shower. I see something horrifying when I go to my room.

To help with my fear of the window, I've been shutting the curtains and the blinds before it gets dark outside. Because I wasn't here all day, the window and everything outside of it is completely visible.

I resist the urge to call Aiden again. Although he's only slept here one night, he's visited many times. I don't wanna bother him after what just happened though. I tell myself to suck it up. To handle it. To pull myself together.

I stand in front of it, and the first thing I see is a lone figure crossing the street. It looks like it's holding something in its arms, moving quickly.

It hears something, and then it runs.

I shut my blinds quickly, pulling the curtains shut. I grab my phone in shaky hands, dialing Axel's number.

Come on. Come on. Come on.

"Hey," his groggy voice fills my ears.

I take in a deep breath.

"Are you alright?" he asks. "Is everything alright?"

"I don't know. I saw something."

Axel's voice picks up. "What?"

I'm afraid to look at the window, but I'm also afraid to look away from it. "It was a person. Outside my window."

"Are they trying to get in?" he asks.

"You're coming with me to get the groceries." She nudges me out of bed.

She's lost her mind. "Is Michael coming?"

"No."

I frown. "Why not?" Why is it just me? Not even Megan or Charlie?

"Because you're not going to get your brother to sweet talk your way out of this." She wraps her scarf around her neck, adjusting her coat. Then her eyes narrow. "Or is he in on it already?"

"No." I wave my hands wildly. "He doesn't know."

"Then hurry up before he does." She leaves my room.

I stagger out of bed, grabbing my phone. Once I've brushed my teeth and gotten dressed, I go downstairs.

"Hurry," Mom says. "Before your father finds out I didn't bring him along for 'the showdown.'"

I imagine Michael saying the same thing. 'Mom found out? ... And you didn't let me record it?' I pick up the pace.

Once we're in the car, I expect Bri and Krys to show up. But then I realize I'm not with Michael. It would be weird for them to just pop up, considering they don't know Mom. She knows Suzie better than them, and it's pretty early. It might not even be their shift.
