Ayla spoke coolly. “You can go now.”

Laura let out a breath of relief.

Ayla always had a gentle temper. Even if she had caught her taking something, she wouldn’t have made a big deal out of it. After all, Ayla only cared about Troy and never paid attention to anything else.

Still, she was embarrassed and quickly left the room.

Ayla opened every closet door. It didn’t take long to find the small, tucked–away package in the corner. She confirmed it was the one from Halle, grabbed it, and left without a pause.

Downstairs, she ran into Laura again—this time with her phone out, clearly about to call Troy.

Laura froze, immediately pulling her hand back.

Ayla didn’t greet her. She just walked past.

Laura didn’t expect Ayla to leave so suddenly. She called out, “Mrs. Winston, Mr. Winston will be back soon. Aren’t you staying to make him dinner?”

Ayla’s steps halted.

She turned and looked at Laura.

Laura flinched under the sharp, icy gaze. Something felt different again.

The lady of the house hadn’t been back in almost a month, but now she carried a pressure Laura couldn’t explain.

Laura was stunned. “Mrs. Winston, aren’t you going a bit too far this time? What if Mr. Winston won’t forgive you?”
