Even though Ayla didn’t have the social connections Troy did, her mindset had gotten so much stronger. As a result, she found she could take control over many things that used to feel impossible.

So, when faced with Troy’s threats, Ayla just gave a scornful little laugh. “Troy, do you really think you’re the one who gets to decide whether we get divorced?”

“What do you mean?”

“Your threats don’t work on me at all. I’m not afraid of you.”

Ayla’s voice was cold. “You flew all the way to Aqualith this morning to see me, wanting to spend our anniversary together. Since that’s what you want, I’ll spend it with you.”

These words came out of Ayla only because she was no longer feeling small around Troy. She no longer felt the need to please him, and she’d started caring about her own feelings. That was what it meant to take back control.

“If you’re not willing or can’t do it, then you have one option. Leave.”

Ayla’s eyes were ice–cold as she looked at Troy. “Troy, our marriage is over. You need to accept that. I have no obligation to go along with you anymore, and you can’t change any of my decisions.

“If you keep treating me with zero respect and trampling over me like before, Troy, then I’ll make sure you go down with me, even if it takes everything I have.”

Now, Ayla finally understood what it meant to live for herself.

Self–love meant caring about her own feelings and standing up for herself. She wouldn’t give Troy another chance to order her around or step all over her again.

The worst that could happen was they’d go down together. But she refused to let herself get hurt again, so she had to stand tall.

Ayla had never sounded so sure of herself. She was like a slab of thick, solid ice. No matter how hard Troy tried, she just wouldn’t crack.

Troy had no doubt that even if he threatened her, Ayla was never going to bend.

He had all the social power money could buy, and he could pull off things most people could only dream of, but even he was scared to run into someone this stubborn.

Troy stayed silent for a long time, then finally said in a cold voice, “Fine. I’ll go along with you.”

Ayla was about to treat Troy like he didn’t even exist, but he actually gave in.

She never expected there’d be a day when Troy would back down to her.

People are really pathetic sometimes.

Ayla didn’t say anything and just went out to get breakfast.

From now on, she would only do what she felt like doing.

the restaurant.

To her surprise, she ran into Shawn at the restaurant.

Shawn saw Troy, who looked absolutely gloomy behind Ayla. When he looked at Ayla again, his expression totally changed.

He immediately said with a smile, “What a coincidence, Ms. Keaton.”

Ayla asked, “Are you here to see Mr. Storm?”

Shawn replied, “We’re here for Mr. Storm–and for you, too.”

Ayla was surprised. “For me?”

“Last night, you almost got hurt on my cruise. If Draven hadn’t stepped in, who knows how things would’ve turned out. You left in such a hurry, so while you’re still in Aqualith, I wanted to apologize to you in person.”

Ayla understood. Shawn was here to give Draven an explanation, to let him know what happened to Luke, and to wrap things up neatly.

Ayla was ready to take Shawn to see Draven.

As for Troy, she wasn’t going to worry about him.

But then Shawn joked, “Mr. Storm really val to marry you, haha.”

Ms. Keaton. Last night he even said he wanted

Ayla studied Shawn.

He sounded like he was joking, but he was really covering for Draven.

Because of Troy.

Shawn was Draven’s best friend. In Shawn’s eyes, Ayla was Draven’s secretary, and since Draven cared so much about her, he figured their relationship must be special. He knew that Troy wouldn’t be able to tolerate this, so he felt even more obligated to help his buddy.

Ayla couldn’t say she disliked that kind of behavior, but she definitely didn’t like it either.

She planned to drop the subject, but Troy’s cold voice sounded right beside her. “Ayla, what exactly happened last night?”

“It’s none of your business.”

Shawn said, “Since Ms. Keaton doesn’t want to talk about it, I won’t say any more. Troy, don’t make things hard for Ayla, or her boss won’t be happy.”

Troy glared at Shawn. “Mind your own business.”

“Ms. Keaton is my VIP guest. That’s not really meddling.” Shawn just smiled, totally unfazed.

Ayla knew right then that Troy was going to bring up their marriage, so she figured she might as well say it herself. “Mr. Shawn, Troy is my ex–husband.”

Whatever Troy wanted to say got stuck in his throat. He just glared at Ayla, his mood dark and

stormy.
