Juliet used to pretend to be the kind, gentle older relative. But after Ayla snapped at her without holding back, Juliet didn’t even bother to fake it anymore. Her face turned cold.
Ayla noticed the change right away.
With that cold expression, Juliet really did look like her mother. But not exactly.
Her mother carried real authority.
Juliet carried a hint of bitterness.
Zane also spotted Ayla.
Ayla looked a lot like Kaleb–same eyes, same quiet fire. Zane hated people like that. He always felt they were fake. He gave a sharp, disgusted snort. “You ungrateful brat. Juliet treats you so well, and you don’t even appreciate it. You and Kaleb deserve the mess you’re in. It’s nothing but your foolishness.”
Zane smirked, proud of himself. “When I buy out Kalebs company, you and your dear brother better stay far
away from me and Juliet. Don’t come near us and don’t ruin her good mood.”
Kaleb was holding back the truth. Nobody knew about the database project. Nobody knew Ayla had secretly invested 300 million in him.
Zane still thought Kaleb was broke and stubbornly faking confidence.
Ayla had originally planned to stay quiet. But now? Not anymore.
If someone hurt the people she loved, she wanted them to feel it.
Tonight, she planned to make Zane pay.
Zane saw she wasn’t reacting and continued bragging, thrilled with himself. “Oh, right. Troy just bought Skyla a huge place. Amazing neighborhood, too. He even went with her to pick everything out. Ayla, he never treated you that well, did he? Are you losing your mind with jealousy yet?”
Juliet glanced at Ayla after hearing that.
Ayla might be harsh to Juliet, but she had once loved Troy deeply. She had held onto him for three years. She had her mother intelligence and stubbornness once she chose someone. Now that the marriage was over, could Ayla really walk away from Troy?
Juliet once had a strange hope about Juliana. She hoped Juliana would make a mistake someday. Be imperfect. Be human.
Only then could Juliet ever catch up with her.
Now, that strange longing landed on Juliana’s daughter instead.
It wasn’t true jealousy toward Ayla. It was the shadow of everything she had felt toward her perfect older sister being shifted onto the niece who resembled her so much.
Juliet waited for Ayla’s reaction.
But Ayla didn’t give her anything–no surprise, no gratitude, not even annoyance.

Zane opened his mouth to speak, but Juliet stopped him with a sigh. “Ayla, I know you take after your mother. You’re smart. But you’re still not on her level ye. Don’t try to do everything alone. If I can help you, I will.”
Juliet meant Skyla, who had a master’s degree and a polished résumé.
Ayla only had a bachelor’s degree. Even if she was gifted she hadn’t been trained or polished; to Juliet, her talent couldn’t fully shine. Right now, Ayla still couldn’t compare to Skyla.
Ayla replied coldly, “I told you. I don’t need your help.”
Zane was even angrier than Juliet. “Ayla, you’re unbelievable. No sense of gratitude at all!”
Ayla gave Juliet some respect because Juliet was technically her aunt. Zane, however? She didn’t bother.
She glanced at him once, didn’t say a word, and simply turned to leave.
Her silence was louder than shouting. Zane felt it–Ayla’s pure, sharp disdain. She treated him as if he didn’t exist, like he wasn’t even worth her time. It stung more than anything Kaleb ever said to him.
Zane had never gained the upper hand with Ayla, not once. And the more he couldn’t understand where she got her confidence, the deeper his hatred grew for these two siblings.
He wanted Kaleb’s company to crash. He wanted Kaleb to lose everything, maybe kill himself afterward.
As for Ayla? He couldn’t figure her out, but compared to Skyla, she was nothing but a woman abandoned by her ex–husband–a complete failure in life.
Someone like her, still standing tall? Still holding her head up?
Zane scoffed internally. Ridiculous.
He hoped Ayla and Kaleb could never lift their heads around him.
And this whole confrontation fell right into Troy’s line of sight.
He had just arrived for lunch with Skyla. The driver had barely parked when Troy spotted Zane outside the
restaurant.
That’s when he remembered Kaleb’s game company being in trouble,
Ayla wasn’t his wife anymore. Who was she supposed to turn to for help now?
Troy tapped his fingers lightly on the armrest.
Ayla hiring a male escort had pushed his buttons last night, but the thought of how badly that must’ve stung Draven oddly soothed him.
Annoying. Confusing. But strangely satisfying. Ayla had been so eager to divorce him.
Fine. He would let that go for now.
When Troy was in a good mood, he didn’t mind doing something nice, like fixing Kaleb’s problems for Ayla.

After all, he still needed Ayla to appear with him at his grandfather’s birthday banquet. They couldn’t be fighting every second.
Troy unlocked his phone and pulled up Ayla’s contact. He had never bowed his head to her. Even now, wanting to help, he saw it as tossing her a sweet reward–something to keep her obedient and cooperative.
But to Ayla, that reward would be a lifeline.
