Draven kept rubbing ointment on Ayla’s wrist, speaking like it was nothing. “Troy saw you kiss me in the car, didn’t he?”
Ayla kept her head down. “Yeah. That’s what set him off.”
“You worried it’s too much and scared to keep putting on a show with me to mess with Troy?”
“We can’t let him throw a fit and be right,” Ayla said. “He overreacted because it was the first time. That’s normal. If it happens more, he’ll get used to it. The more he flips, the more we know it’s working. Nothing
to fear.”
Then she added, “Besides, with you around, I have nothing to be afraid of.”
“Planning to keep using me?”
Ayla was stunned. “You don’t want to do it anymore?”
Draven said flatly, “We both hate Troy. Of course I’m in.”
She relaxed. Draven was Troy’s weak spot. If he didn’t cooperate, she’d lose her edge whenever Troy tried to mess with her.
Thinking about teaming up made her realize she was getting the better deal. She needed to give Draven a little in return first–she couldn’t wait until the end.
“Draven, I won’t hide it from you. Troy was acting weird tonight. It’s like he doesn’t want me to leave him. Of course, I’m not going back. But if he changes his mind, he’ll keep/showing up and causing trouble.”
Tonight, Troy had tied her up and tried to drag her away. If he spiraled, he might even try to kidnap her abroad. It was illegal, but Troy wouldn’t care. He could absolutely make it happen.
Maybe she was exaggerating. Maybe it was just an emotional fit, and he’d calm down once he accepted the situation.
But those were just guesses. Ayla had to think in worst–case scenarios and be prepared.
“Troy has the power to crush me like an ant, so all I can do is ask you for help. It means you’ll end up doing even more. We said we’d team up to piss him off, but at this rate, I’m just using you to shield me from his
nonsense.”
Draven met her eyes. “Feeling guilty?”
Ayla nodded. “Even friends don’t burden each other this much.”
“So, what do you want to do?”
“Since I know what’s happening, I can’t just keep taking. Tell me what I can do for you now. I’ll pay a little

back. That way, next time I need your help, I can ask without thinking twice.”
“You want to settle the score between us?”
Ayla nodded. “Yeah. I hate owing people. You’re kind and helpful, but I can’t just take without giving anything back.”

Draven had thought it might be better if she owed him more. But the fact that she hated owing him actually worked in his favor.
“Fine. I’ll take a little interest.”
Ayla brightened. “What do you want?”
“Be my girlfriend.”
She thought she had misheard, baffled. “What?”
Draven repeated, “Be my girlfriend.”
Ayla froze. Now she really got it.
Her first reaction was shock. Did he mean she had to pay him back with herself? As if she owed him and now had to hand herself over? It felt like putting a price on gratitude.
She was young, successful, rich, and full of potential. She was only temporarily stuck with a jerk, but her world was wide open and waiting. No one and nothing was worth throwing herself away.
Next, she imagined the chaos it would cause. Friends, especially loudmouth James, would freak out. Kaleb would complain, let alone the Winstons. And the Storms in Zheron? She didn’t even know them yet.
The Storms had to be complicated. Who knew what problems that would bring? The thought alone was exhausting.
Finally, she considered what he really meant. Did Draven actually like her?
She tried to recall signs of love.
But the longer she thought, the more she realized there had always been a clear boundary between them. Her focus on Draven had been all work. She knew he liked collecting glassware, but she’d never cared about his personal life–relationships, hobbies, nothing.
She never wanted to dig. Draven was just her boss. She didn’t have much interest beyond that.
Besides, Troy occupied all her attention. Even after the diyorce, he dominated her thoughts. When he asked about her likes, she cared and answer honestly. If Draven had asked her that, she would’ve just given safe, polite answers as a secretary–never her real self.
