No one spoke in the car. There was a clean, cool scent of perfume, and neon lights flashed past the windows. For some reason, Ayla suddenly thought of Juliana.
Without realizing it, her eyes turned red.
Ayla kept looking out the window, not letting anyone notice.
More than half an hour later, on 19 Norton Road.
James’s new place.
This whole neighborhood was full of beautiful old houses.
Halle lived next door at number 18. James really had become Halle’s neighbor. They were just passing by, and they didn’t see Halle.
After getting out of the car, Ayla casually opened the passenger door and took out the gifts. A long, slender hand reached out beside her and took both shopping bags without asking.
Ayla turned and saw Draven. She naturally handed the bags to him. She didn’t know what gifts he’d bought, only that they were pretty heavy.
Just as Ayla was about to say they should go in together, she noticed Draven frowning at her
eyes.
Her emotions in the car had been a little sudden, but it shouldn’t have been obvious. She blinked, then looked toward the door. “Let’s-”
She’d only gotten out one sound when Draven grabbed her chin and turned her face toward him.
He stared straight into her eyes, his tone unreadable. “You cried?”
His
gaze
was sharp, as if it could see right through her.
Ayla felt a little flustered and pushed his hand away. “I didn’t.”
Draven didn’t let it go. “Why were you crying?”
“I wasn’t.” Ayla denied it.
Draven tightened his hand, gave a low grunt, and didn’t ask any more.
Ayla finally relaxed. He stepped aside first, and she walked in beside him.

James’s housewarming was crowded. The street parking was packed with luxury cars of all sizes.
After only a few steps, Ayla saw a tall man wrapped up from head to toe get out of a black van. He was also carrying gifts. He followed after them and glanced at Ayla and Draven several times.
Ayla knocked on James’s door first.
The door opened quickly. Max was the one who answered. When he saw Ayla, the irritation on his face vanished instantly. His lips curved up, and his eyes filled with a honey–sweet smile. “Hey, Ayla.”
Draven frowned slightly, almost imperceptibly.
That smile was annoying.
“It’s been a week,” Max said casually. After Ayla nodded, he looked at Draven. The moment their eyes met, Max frowned a little. He felt a strange hostility, though maybe he was just being sensitive. “Hello, Mr. Storm.”
Draven didn’t see any need to respond. He walked in with a cold face.
Max noticed the two gifts in his hands. The extra one was obviously Ayla’s.
Max’s eyes lowered. His gaze suddenly turned cold as he glanced at Draven’s back.
“I’ll head in,” Ayla said casually.
Max snapped back immediately and smiled gently at her. “Okay. I’ll find you for a drink later.”
Ayla nodded and walked away.
Nearby, the man wearing a mask and sunglasses took everything off, revealing a perfectly made–up, strikingly handsome face. He reached out and patted Max’s chest, leaning in to whisper in his ear. “Dude, you’re into her.”
It was Derek Newman, a top–tier star who was everywhere lately. Judging by his outfit, he’d probably slipped over from some event.
James knew people everywhere, including plenty of troublemaking friends from the entertainment world.
It was their first meeting, and the comment crossed a line. Max just smiled, like they’d been friends for ten years.
Seeing how friendly he was, Derek raised an eyebrow. Big–name celebrities were used to

radiating charm with every move, and he did the same now. “I can help you.”
Max smiled and leaned closer.
Derek got even more excited, already expecting to be asked for a favor. Instead, he heard, “So is it true you sleep with female fans?”
Derek froze, and the smile on his face visibly stiffened.
Max straightened up. His smile vanished, replaced by a cold look. He swept Derek with a glance, then turned and walked into the house.
Anything connected to James put Max in a bad mood. If he hadn’t found out Ayla was coming, he never would’ve shown up to put up with James and his crazy friends.
Draven had arrived, and James was busy hovering around him. Ayla stood off to the side.
Max checked again and again. There didn’t seem to be anything special between the two of them, but they’d come together, and Draven was even carrying her gifts. Nothing about it felt right.
He suddenly remembered the night Ayla got divorced and ordered male escorts at the bar. Draven had been there too.
A sudden wave of unease hit Max.
He couldn’t stand still anymore. He walked toward Ayla.
Ayla was admiring James’s new home. The small house was fully renovated in a minimalist style, very artistic. The hard finishes were on par with Halle’s place, but since he’d just moved in, there wasn’t much soft décor yet. Overall, it lacked a bit of warmth. Most of the
housewarming gifts were things like furnishings. Once everything was arranged, it would look
great.
