Halle didn’t want to at all. “I’ve been really busy lately.”

“I know. That’s why I said when you have time,” James said, his skin thick as a fortress wall. The rejection was obvious, but he pretended not to hear it and kept pushing his luck. “I saved your life tonight, didn’t I? If you don’t repay the favor, that’s just wrong.”
Halle’s temple twitched. “I wasn’t in any life–threatening danger. Who said you saved my life?”
James turned to Ayla, playing the wounded victim. “Come and be the judge. My sincere heart’s been completely crushed!”
At some point, Draven had walked up behind James. He pressed a finger to the back of James’s neck and shoved him forward. James had been feeling smug and suddenly stumbled a step, turning back in irritation. “What the hell? A sneak attack?”
Draven looked at him. “Knocked a screw loose today?”
James rolled his eyes. “I’m perfectly fine.”
Draven knew he was just acting up. “Talk properly.”
Ayla gently reminded him from the side, “Even Mr. Storm’s had enough.”
“Ayla, you’re not even taking my side?” James pretended to be angry. “Wilfrid, take the late- night food back to my place! Don’t let them eat it. Heartless bunch!”
Wilfrid set a pot of beef stew on the table.
James said, “You’re not listening to me either? No one cares about me anymore,
“These dishes are Ms. Kinsman’s,” Wilfrid said.
huh.”
Halle’s home was refined down to the smallest detail. Even the small bowls for the beef stew
were beautiful.
James was stunned.
Halle said, “This set cost me a lot. I’m not giving it to you.”
James sneered. “You’re so cheap.” He was joking, of course. He wasn’t actually mad, and he definitely wasn’t taking the food back. But he looked at the dish, pulled out his phone, snapped
photo, and quietly memorized the brand of the porcelain.
Ayla pulled out a chair. “Let’s all sit.”

Draven naturally took the seat next to Ayla.
Normally, James liked sitting beside him, but today, he chose the seat across from Draven.
The table was a vintage round one. With five people, there were only two seats left for Halle. No matter which one she took, she’d be next to James.
Both options were terrible.
Halle glanced at James. The way he talked and acted was infuriating, but his face really was good–looking. By candlelight, his whole presence screamed decadent, spoiled–rich–kid charm. Too bad he had a mouth. If he just shut up and didn’t talk, his attractiveness would double.
Of course, no matter what, he wasn’t the same type as Draven, who was elegant and untouchable.
Since she couldn’t avoid it, Halle chose to sit next to Ayla, with Ayla on one side and James on
the other.
That left one last seat for Wilfrid, right between Draven and James.
Wilfrid had watched James grow up. When James was a kid, he was a menace. Take your eyes off him for one minute, and he’d be up a tree. Once, he climbed a tree in secret. Wilfrid searched everywhere and couldn’t find him, so he rested under the tree. James peed on his head…
He only got worse as he grew up. Thinking about it brought Wilfrid nothing but bitter tears.
He absolutely did not want to sit next to him.
Draven was on the other side. But anyone who could hang out with James probably wasn’t a good person either.
Once the beautifully prepared late–night spread was served, Wilfrid immediately said he was sleepy and going home.
He didn’t even wait for James to speak. After saying that, he left.
Halle couldn’t stop
him.
Then she looked at James, speechless.
James noticed her gaze and looked confused. “The old man wants to sleep. What am I supposed to do, stop him? You said it yourself. No abusing the elderly.”
What else could Halle do?

Chapter 269 Eat Up
“Yeah, sure. You’re always right.”
She ignored James and looked at the table full of food, inviting everyone to cat.
Halle filled a bowl of beef stew and handed it to Ayla.
“Eat up.”
Draven glanced at it, then quietly looked away.
Halle immediately sensed danger and felt her heart skip. She glanced at Draven.
Have I overstepped?
Did Draven want to serve Ayla himself, or was the first bowl supposed to be for him?

Her mind raced through a dozen possibilities. Ayla had already taken the ladle from her, filled a bowl of beef stew, and placed it in front of Halle. “Here. You were startled tonight. This’ll help calm your nerves.”
Draven and James both looked at the bowl in front of Halle at the same time.
Halle froze.
Great.
The atmosphere is getting weirder by the second.
Meanwhile, Ayla felt nothing at all. She calmly filled another bowl and was about to hand it to Draven when James suddenly snatched it away, opened his mouth wide, and gulped half of it in one go. “Thanks.“–
Ayla was dumbfounded.
Does he really have to be this childish?
Draven shot him a murderous look.
After finishing, James looked at Ayla. “Oh, sorry about that. This was meant for Mr. Storm, huh?”
